Big news for Code Garage (and super kudos) as they have been recently acquired by VaultPress which is a relatively similar service in so far as providing backups, security scanning, and assistance for customers in their greatest time of need (e.g. crisis mode when their blog goes down).
Peter Butler, one of the founders of Code Garage, will be joining Automattic in this acquisition as well. Matt Mullenweg states that this is a strategic move because the Code Garage team will be able to bring a lot of their experiences that VaultPress can learn from:
We think we can bring a lot of our expertise in building and scaling Automattic, VaultPress, and WordPress.com to the Code Garage product, and I also hope we can learn from some of CG’s approaches, for example it has a very agency-friendly pricing model that makes it easy for customers to have dozens of sites on it, something VaultPress isn’t good at yet.
The guys over at Code Garage are riding the #9 Cloud right now and they share a few thoughts on their blog as well:
There’s been big news brewing around here for weeks now, and I’m excited that I finally have the opportunity to spill the beans: CodeGarage has been acquired by Automattic, and our backup and security service will be taken over by the VaultPress team.
The 2 years we’ve spent building CodeGarage have been incredible — often terrifying, but always exciting. We’ve got a number of incredibly loyal customers who have been with us right since the beginning — enduring the many stops and starts of a young, bootstrapped business.
I’d like to personally thank you, and every site owner who gave us a chance (and at times, a second chance). Without you, we’d be nowhere.
So what does this mean for them and especially their customers? Nothing at this time as it’ll be business as usual. They will definitely notify their customers as things change in terms of the acquisition (which I’m sure a few things will change) but no one should expect any downtime or disconnection from service.
Congrats guys and best of luck – you’ve joined an incredible family of products and businesses at Automattic and we can’t wait to see how you make both of the service even better!
