Krista over at WordPress.com recently shared some neat facts and figures about the previous year and one of them includes the fact that WordPress.com released over 65 new themes in that calendar year. The napkin math here is over 5 new themes a month!
Pretty impressive numbers considering how much time and energy and effort required to create new themes (and then review them and get them ready for primetime).
There were some incredible improvements beyond just the theme choices as custom design was introduced as an upgrade, doubling of space provided, introduction of SASS and LESS, better WordPress stats, and tiled galleries, and even importers for Tumblr.
If this past year is any indication of what 2013 will look like then you’ll need to hold on to your seats because the momentum won’t slow down.
What will be interesting to see, though, is how WordPress.com will provide a model for other hosted solutions and the features that they will eventually provide for their own customers. Either some convergence will occur at some level or significant differentiation will happen as these independent organization grow their businesses.
I love watching what WPCOM does as their level of innovation continues to inspire. Pumped to be a part of this larger ecosystem of development!
