Automattic, the parent company behind WordPress and other WordPress products like Akismet, Jetpack, and VaultPress, has grown tremendously since it was founded in 2005. Their success can perhaps be attributed to the balance between its commercial venture and open-source spirit.

Matt Mullenweg, CEO and Founder of Automattic has hinted over the years about extending the company’s reach into global commerce. He showed just how serious he was about this plan earlier this year with the acquisition of WooCommerce, which powers roughly 30% of all online stores.
Automattic has gained such momentum over the years that it’s even been included in CB insights 36 ‘unicorns’ that could go public in 2016, among notable tech companies like Uber and Snapchat.
Though Automattic has come a long way, there is still more ground to cover. It’s likely we’ll see more acquisitions in the coming years.
