In WordPress 4.5, you will be able to link text with an inline toolbar. Because this will replace the link modal, you can access it through the gear icon in the toolbar. It will now look like this:
Along with the links, there are new text options:
“We also added some more text patterns, or shortcuts if you like: `text` will change to<code>text</code> and — (or more dashes) will change to <hr> while typing,” the annoucement said.
The team considered adding patterns for bold and italic, but there wasn’t a consensus. The news comes after the announcement of the release candidate for 4.5 last week. 4.5 is set to ship on April 12, which gives developers about three weeks get testing.
