With work on WordPress 4.6 coming to an end, and 4.7 getting ready, WordPress.org is calling for volunteers to lead releases in 2017. Having release leads in place months in advance makes the project much more efficient.
“It might seem advantageous to announce a year’s worth of release leads, but it puts the first and even second release lead at a disadvantage. Going forward, identifying and pre-announcing the next two release leads will help give them time to prepare,” Aaron Jorbin said in the announcment. “For example, at the start of the 4.8 cycle, both the 4.9 and 5.0.” release leads should be confirmed.
Release leads do not need to be developers, however having experience contributing is recommended, Jorbin said. Being a release lead is a huge time commitment which requires making sure every part of the project goes smoothly. It is a tough job, but you will have support from the lead developers, permanent committers, and deputies.
