As promised in the State of the Word, WordPress 4.7 dropped yesterday. The update, named after American Jazz Singer Sarah “Sassy” Vaughan, features a new default theme, the REST API content endpoints, and more.
TwentySeventeen
The newest default theme is designed specifically for businesses. The idea is for anyone with a business to be able to plug content in and go. It is easy to make this theme look good without much knowledge of code or design.
REST API Content Endpoints
The fate of the REST API has been in question since it was rejected from a merge in 4.5 and then again in 4.6. However, it couldn’t be held down for long, and the project finally found its way into WordPress 4.7. Posts, comments, terms, users, meta, and settings are all supported with this merge, which brings us one step closer to a world with a full REST API at our disposal and it is very exciting.
Custom CSS With Live Previews
Developers can put away their child themes because live previews are here. You can now test out plugins and themes before adding them to your website. This will be a huge time saver and save a lot of headaches. Test out how a plugin will work with your site and see the results instantly without pushing anything live.
Translations
A huge focus of Matt Mullenweg’s State of the Word this year was accessibility and translations. As of right now, the CMS is translated into 52 languages. Thanks to the hard work of Ahmad Awais, WordPress is 100 percent translated into Urdu for the first time ever. Awais organized a meetup in Pakistan during the second WP Translation Day and was able to make history.
Automattic
There are many more features in the new update. If for some reason you don’t have automatic updates turned on, you’ll want to make sure you head to your dashboard and get the sassiest update yet.
