Love WordPress news but hate reading? This is Doc Pop’s News Drop!
First and foremost, WordPress version 4.7.5 is out now and it’s a security release. It’s strongly recommended you upgrade immediately.
This update addresses 6 known security issues, some of which allowed hackers to take control of your site. It’s also worth noting that on Joomla released a major security update on the same day to fix a critical SQL injection flaw, but that’s probably unrelated to the WordPress update.
Speaking of WordPress updates, WordPress version 4.8 is scheduled for June 8th, 2017. This small update introduces a WYSIWYG tool for the Text Widget, new media widgets (for image, video, and audio) and a new dashboard widget for WordPress events. It’s a widget explosion! You get a widget and you get a widget!
The new media and text widgets are mostly focused on easily adding media to your site’s sidebar. You can video, images, or even audio.
If you’d like to try version 4.8 early and help report any bugs you find, it’s easy!
Download the WordPress Beta Tester Plugin, activate it, go the the tools section of your site and click on Beta Testing, then click on the Bleeding Edge Nightlies option. From here, you’ll just need to update your site and you should be updated to version 4.8.
Of course you’ll want to back up your site before you do any of that, because it may not be possible to go back to 4.7.5 after upgrading.
If you find any bugs, be sure to report them on Make.WordPress.org.
That’s it for this week’s news drop, be sure to update your sites and follow @thetorquemag on Twitter for the latest in WordPress news.
