Doc’s WordPress News Drop is a weekly report on the most pressing WordPress news. When the news drops, I will pick it up and deliver it right to you.
WordCamp US has just wrapped up and it was a great event this year. We’ve been meeting so many new WordPressers and sharing our video interviews here throughout the weekend. In this week’s News Drop, Doc walks us through some of the big highlights from Matt Mullenweg’s State Of The Word Address.
Love WordPress news, but hate reading? My name is Doc and this is Doc Pop’s News Drop.WordCamp US has officially wrapped up with Matt Mullenweg’s State Of the Word Address. We’ve had a great trip in Nashville and managed to interview 8 interesting WordPressers about topics ranging from accessibility to
education. Check out our playlist to see them all. As far as Matt’s State of the Word, here’s what we heard. 2017 was a great year for WordPress. The WP-CLI project became an official part of WordPress. Since adding the Events Widget to the dashboard in 4.8, meetup attendees jumped up by 31.6%. WordPress meetups nearly had 100,000 attendees in 2017. There were over 4,300 meetups.
No default theme: This year is the first year since 2010 that there wasn’t a new default theme. This allowed the team to focus on more important features and crank out two big releases in 2017. WordPress 4.8 and 4.9 introduced some great new changes to the Customizer. Including saving drafts, preview links, and scheduling. 29% of sites that use Content Management Systems use WordPress. Thanks largely to Let’s Encrypt, over 36% of WordPress websites are using SSL. That’s a 14% jump since last year.
Gutenber has been the longest running major feature developemnt WP has ever had. It’s been 11 months since kick off.
Matias Ventura took the stage for a live demo of Gutenberg, which was a very Apple thing to do. He even said “Oh, one more thing…”… twice! Unironically! It’s looking pretty sharp.
During the demo, which consisted of a lot of dragging and resizing, Matias opened up an HTML editor blog and added a cute example of text using the Marquee tag. It was pretty cute.He demoed a feature called reusuble block, that allows users to save customized blocks and use the over and over again later. He also showed a couple cool features to help improve accessibilty and readability. For example, if you posted dark font on purple background, a contrast ratio alert will display. As far as Gutenberg’s release, Matt says we are still at least 4 months away. Many of us were expecting Gutenberg and WordPress 5.0 early next year. That’s it for this this week’s News Drop and this year’s WordCamp US. Be sure to check out our full playlist for some more great interviews.
