We’ve shared before the incredible news that 17% of the top 1,000,000 sites are now powered by WordPress – and that number is growing every single day.
It’s an unbelievable time to be using WordPress and we are all riding a decidely-large wave of adoption that’s been growing over the last several years. Wherever you host, regardless of size, if you’re using WordPress then you are a part of a fantastic and passionate community that is just as successful as the next – and this community is definitely international.
What’s fascinating is that although WordPress is a world-wide community the hosting solutions and choices made by the top 1MM sites, is not. It’s clearly United States centric:
The top three cities combined account for about 10% of the top million websites.
What city hosts the biggest number of these top websites? Houston, Texas, in the United States, singlehandedly harbors over 50,000 of these sites, making it the number one city. Mountain View, California, is in the number two slot with almost 30,000 sites.
Coming in at #3 is Dallas, Texas. Those Texas people apparently really know how to host. Look at this chart via Pingdom for the full scope – if you’re interested in seeing the top 100 you can review their comprehensive table directly:
Do you know where your hosting provider is geographically located? Does this matter a lot to you or has it never crossed your mind?
Even though this research and data is about any type of site in the top 1MM the fact that 17% is WordPress means that you can generally extrapolate the results well enough.
I for one don’t really care so much about the particular geographic location as long as they have the infrastructure to serve a world-wide audience.
