WordPress.org today is starting to roll out new and updated theme tags, which will make it easier for users to filter themes. The idea for the overhaul comes from the Theme Directory survey conducted last year.
“One of the things that the team believed to be low-hanging fruit was an overhaul of the theme tags system to something a bit more modern and useful for today’s WordPress users,” the announcement said.
You can go to the theme page now to see a draft of the included tags. If you are a theme author, now is the time to start updating those tags.
“Take a look at the tags that have been removed and the tags that have been added in the lists below,” the annoucement said. “You’ll want to remove the “removed” tags from your theme’s style.css and add any new tags that are relevant to your theme.”
All color tags have been removed, as well as certain layouts, features, and subject tags, shown below.
If you use any of these, it is time to change now. The tags that were added are shown below.
If you’re wondering why certain tags were chosen to stay or go, the announcement includes links to all of the discussions leading up to the overhaul.
Because themes and user preferences change so much, the team has agreed to have a yearly tag review to make sure the Theme Directory is always updated and continues to be useful. If there’s a tag you’re missing or think is useless, join in on the next conversation in January.
This change will make it easier for users to navigate the theme directory. The more people that get involved in the yearly tag review, the more efficient the Theme Directory will become.
