On Wednesday, March 16 at 11 a.m. CT, WP Engine will host a free webinar on AngularJS and the REST API featuring Torque contributor and owner and developer of CalderaWP Josh Pollock and WordPress core contributor and operations engineer at WP Engine Anthony Burchell. Space is limited so reserve your seat today! Geared towards intermediate to advanced WordPress developers, this 45-minute webinar will take an in-depth look at how to use AngularJS with the WordPress REST API. This is increasingly important to the future of WordPress because “together, these tools help you tie systems together to customize user experiences, build plugins, […]
Wait! Don’t Download That Theme Or Plugin
Many beginners find themselves awestruck by the thousands of plugins available for WordPress. With all the shiny five-star options, it’s easy to slip into the trap of installing too many plugins in an attempt to bolster your website’s functionality. It is absolutely critical to understand that each plugin you add represents another moving part, which makes your site more fragile, complex, and bloated. As such, minimizing your plugin count is one of the best routes to a fast and stable site. With that necessary preface behind us, here are some warning signs you can check for to ensure that the […]
11 Best WordPress Translation Plugins For Multilingual Websites
With a share of almost 26 percent of worldwide Internet users, English is the most spoken language online (as of November 2015). That means if your WordPress site is set up in this particular language, it appeals to the largest singular group of users out there. The bad news, however, is that you are missing out on the other 74 percent — that’s roughly 2.5 billion people. Yeah, you read that right. That’s two and a half billion who people could be reading your content, buying your product, signing up for your service, and more. If only you (or your […]
Basics Of AngularJS With The WordPress REST API
For the last few months, I’ve been writing extensively about two related, but seemingly contradictory points: the first is that learning a JavaScript MVC framework doesn’t equal learning JavaScript deeply. The second is that AngularJS is amazing — I love it and so should you. If you want to learn JavaScript deeply, take a course, read a book, and study the language. If you want to build something cool quickly learn Angular. But don’t skip learning the JavaScript basics. I think learning Angular is pretty easy, but that’s because I understand JavaScript fundamentals. If you’re new to JavaScript, then this article […]
Why WordPress Needs The Fields API And How To Use It
Imagine someone creates an open-source, JavaScript admin interface for their WordPress site and names it after a greek demigod. You’re probably thinking wow, that’s so cool, I wonder if I can make it work on my site. But then you start thinking about all of the custom metaboxes and other types of custom forms that plugins add to the post, term, and user edit screens. There is no standard for metaboxes or for declaring what fields a plugin has to use. Making something that “just works” with everything is increasingly more complicated. Custom API-driven interfaces remain the territory of those who […]
5 Steps To Get Your WordPress Load Time Under Two Seconds
WordPress website running slow? A chief complaint I come across from WordPress users is, “My website is so slow!” And they are right. Their sites take 5-10 seconds to load. That’s way too long. Back in 2010, Google said that websites should load in two seconds or less, and a 2009 survey found that “47 percent of consumers expect a web page to load in two seconds or less.” On top of that, “40 percent of consumers will wait no more than three seconds for a web page to render before abandoning the site.” See more info about this study […]
WP REST API Will Not Be Included In 4.5
The REST API will not be included in WordPress 4.5, according to an update posted by Adam Silverstein, Senior Web Engineer at 10UP. “The REST API team’s proposal is to merge the four main endpoints when they are ready, and they are not ready for 4.5,” the post said. “As such, no endpoints are targeted for WordPress 4.5.” This news comes after last week’s conversation during which Matt Mullenweg said he was uncomfortable merging the REST API until the endpoints were complete. He was referring to the fact that the four default endpoints aren’t ready, even though they are available in the plugin. […]
Will Immersive Education Lead To A Generation of Developers?
So, I was reading news online the other day and I came across a story about this new toy from Fisher-Price that’s designed to give preschoolers their first introduction to coding. “Say what?” I thought as I clicked through to read it. Apparently, the Think & Learn Code-a-Pillar is a toy that’s meant to introduce 3 year olds to the concepts behind coding including problem solving and sequencing. It’s super basic, but that’s the point. Each segment of the Code-a-Pillar has a different function like turn left, turn right, flash lights, or make a sound. Depending on how you plug […]
11 Best eCommerce Plugins for WordPress
Over time, WordPress has evolved from a simple blogging platform to a fully functional CMS. You can now use WordPress to power just about any website — including eCommerce stores. However, the WordPress core doesn’t come readily equipped with eCommerce functionality. If you want to build a thriving online store, you’ll need to install a selection of plugins. In today’s post, I want to introduce a collection of 11 of my favorite eCommerce plugins for WordPress. We won’t get too bogged down with like-for-like plugins, like many plugin roundups. Instead, I’ve handpicked a range of plugins, each serving a different […]
WP REST API Version 2.0 Beta 12 Released Despite Project’s Uncertain Future
With the readiness of the WP REST API still in question, developer Daniel Bachhuber yesterday announced the release of REST API Version 2.0 Beta 12, called Canyonero. You can download it from the plugin repository or GitHub. The most notable changes include removing meta endpoints from the primary plugin. “If your project depends on post meta endpoints, please install WP REST API Meta Endpoints,” Bachhuber wrote in the post. Other changes include returning original resource when deleting PTCU, moving to consistent use of context throughout controllers, and more. You can read the full list of changes here. The update comes on the heels of a contentious Slack […]
