Today is a big day for the guys over at InfiniteWP as they hit 100,000 WordPress websites been managed with InfiniteWP!

What what!

I work closely with the guys over at InfiniteWP on software testing, idea’s and supporting there users and I know something very big is coming to celebrate reaching this goal!

There are even rumors of a possible giveaway – no details yet though. You should probably check out the blog sometime soon for this announcement…

There are now many good WordPress management tools and services; if you have been managing several WordPress sites by hand, the first time you use the basic bulk updating features of ANY of them is a revelation, you instantly realize that you have been needlessly wasting time.

For my situation, IWP is by far the best because I can run it locally to manage both local and remote WordPress sites – a hosted service would only allow me to update only the “live” sites that I have up on my servers but I would be left to manage, by hand, the dozens of test sites on my local machine. I also feel that running it locally is more secure than using a hosted service, because I only need to switch it on for a few minutes every day.

For most ordinary folks, who don’t run local test sites, the advantage of IWP is that it allows you to do pretty much all the basic updating stuff that all the services offer, but for free and with no limitation on the number of sites. That is brave positioning, giving so much functionality for free, because they are confident that most users will find it so useful that they will eventually realize that the additional paid features are well worth paying for, but they don’t force it in any way, you can keep using the substantial free functionality, on an unlimited number of sites, forever. There really is no reason not to at least use the free version.

For users with a lot of their own sites or, especially, anyone managing sites for others, the paid addons are a no-brainer, you can buy the full set and have access to all future updates and new addons, forever, for LESS than the upfront price for ONE year of managing just 15 sites at the top level on one of the hosted services (or 35 sites at the second-highest level, if you think that is a better comparison but I do think IWP is closer to the top level, with the added advantage of being able to run it locally). If you are in this business, the years fly by pretty fast and it would be annoying to have to keep paying larger and larger lump sums every year as the number of sites you manage grows and you have no control over what future pricing might be.

Again, there are a lot of great options out there, I am glad that each of them exists and, for certain situations, I do sometimes recommend them. For me, however, IWP has been great from the start, zero technical issues, the friendly, smart guys behind it are focused on continual improvement and I prefer their product model to any of the others.
