On March 31, Daniel Bachhuber announced the release of Dictator. Dictator aims to alleviate the difficulties of website configuration by providing users with the ability to easily configure WordPress to YAML state files. This has been cultivated through the way that Dictator understands WordPress as states. Bachhuber breaks down exactly what states are in the announcement:
States are collections of regions. Each state file has the state declaration along with tracked configuration details for each region. Regions have a defined schema which produces the translation between the human-readable YAML file and how WordPress stores state in the database.
Additionally, Dictator provides users with the ability to destroy defiant WordPress sites and—by using comprehensible YAML files—simply provision a new version of the site.
It’s through the guidance of SaltStack that Dictator has evolved its superb provisioning capabilities. It has also been endowed with the ability to be installed as a command line interface for WordPress, WP- CLI. This has enabled Dictator “to commit the state file to version control to share between environments, or with another developer.”
Dictator has tackled, at least to some extent, one of the major portability problems of WordPress. It’s an easy alternative to provisioning systems. Try it out, and let us know what you think!
Has anyone used Dictator yet?
