Doc Pop’s News Drop: Mass Deletion of Unused WordPress Plugins
Doc’s WordPress News Drop is a weekly report on the most pressing WordPress news. When the news drops, I will pick it up and deliver it right to you. There are over 9,000 plugins that have been approved, but the developers never uploaded the code. It’s believed that many of these developers submitted their plugins just for free security review or just to squat on a plugin name. So the WordPress Plugin Review Team have announced they will start deleting these “unused” plugins from the repository. This week we’ll talk about a few of those unused plugins plus we’ll have […]
The New Plugin Repository: Just A Beginning
Last week the long-awaited WordPress.org plugin directory was rolled out. While this re-design has been in an open beta for months. Many users and developers felt taken off guard by the launch, which happened without warning. In a comment on the announcement post, Kevin Hoffman summed up much of the community’s frustration about what was supposed to be a user data and feedback driven re-design he said, “In many of the discussions leading up to launch, user data and feedback were promised to be the decision-makers, although it did not exist at the time. Much of the early feedback (regarding […]

New Guidelines For Naming Plugins Announced By WordPress.org
On Monday, Pippin Williamson announced that WordPress.org is changing their guidelines for acceptable plugin names for plugins submitted to the official repository. Going forward, plugin developers will not be able to use a trademarked product name or term, company name, or other plugins’ name as their plugin’s name or slug — unless you are representing the company who owns the trademark or plugin in an official capacity or have written permission from the company. If you fail to meet these guidelines, your plugin will be rejected. To verify you work for, own, or represent the company in question, you must submit […]
How Plugin Developers Should Manage Image Assets
With the release of WordPress 4.0, the plugin installation experience saw a bit of an upgrade to make it more user friendly. This means users will be turning to the WordPress.org repository and WordPress admin more and more to browse and discover new plugins. As a plugin developer, making sure that you have all of the proper assets, a banner, an icon, and screenshots is a great way to ensure that users will understand what your plugin does, and make it stand out in search results. Now is probably a good time to take stock of the image assets that […]
The Plugin Installation Experience Gets an Upgrade in WordPress 4.0
It’s here: WordPress 4.0. As some of you know, my main passion in WordPress happens to be plugins, and above all, plugin discoverability. And WordPress 4.0 has made some great strides in this area, adding a completely new plugin installation experience that makes it easier to sort and find the plugin you are looking for. To see what the new plugin installation interface looks like, you can visit Plugins -> Add New after you have updated to WordPress 4.0. You’ll notice some pretty big changes right away. The most noticeable change is an upgraded UI, where installable plugins are arranged […]
Taking a Second Look at the Plugin Repository
Just last week, the WordPress plugin repository passed the 30,000 plugins hosted mark. This is, of course, an incredible achievement and one that reflects both the magnitude of the WordPress project and the spirit of its community. It also got me thinking. 30,000 is a lot of plugins. There are many plugins that are outdated, ineffective, and potentially harmful to WordPress installs. Finding those, however, can be a daunting task, and regulating them can be even more difficult. I began thinking out loud on Twitter, and was able to come up with a few suggestions. I think that it’s certainly a […]
