Q&A with Co-Founder of WooThemes, Magnus Jepson
Last Wednesday, WooThemes celebrated its 6th birthday, which in startup years is no small feat! Throughout its life cycle, WooThemes has evolved alongside WordPress, and established itself as a leading WordPress theme and plugin provider. In fact, WooThemes has even built the leading eCommerce plugin for WordPress—WooCommerce. I had the pleasure of emailing with Magnus Jepson—one of the co-founders of WooThemes—and he was kind enough to answer my questions regarding the hardships, accomplishments, and growth that WooThemes has experienced over the years. Here’s what he had to say: As the co-founder of WooThemes, does the vision you had 6 years ago […]
WooThemes Continues to Investigate Security Breach
Last Friday, Mark Forrester released an important announcement indicating that WooThemes was investigating a series of fraudulent activities on their customers’ credit cards. Since then, WooThemes has been working to address the issue, and to determine the exact cause of the breach. Yesterday, in a follow-up announcement, Magnus Jepson shared some information about the incident: Fraudulent charges are believed to have begun around May 1. The hackers may have obtained the credit card details somewhere between checkout and their off-site credit card processor. Customers affected by the breach are suspected to be those who made purchases between November 27, 2013 and May 8, 2014. Jepson […]

The End of WP App Store
WordPress entrepreneur Brad Touesnard announced on his blog today that he has shut down his premium plugin marketplace project, WP App Store, which has been in the works for roughly two years. I had the chance to chat with Touesnard about his decision, and he explained that it was “time to kind of clean house.” The last change made to WP App Store was over two months ago, and with no plans for future changes, the project was stagnating—neither growing nor evolving. On finally making the decision to pull the plug, Touesnard confides that the choice wasn’t based on numbers, […]
New Home for Standard Theme
After 8BIT recently closed shop, many people expressed concern over the destiny the company’s core product, Standard Theme. Was it going to be retired…discontinued? No one seemed to know. On 8BIT’s blog—which has been notably silent as of late—an announcement was just made: Standard Theme has been acquired by WooThemes. It lives on! 8BIT’s been working on a “transition” strategy behind the scenes, and as they explain in their post, WooThemes will be providing support for Standard Theme and its customers moving forward. Existing customers will receive more information from 8BIT soon, and new customers can go straight WooThemes in the near future […]
The Cost of Support
As a human-type, I like things like food, clothing, shelter…and coding. Although it would be nice to live in a cave, throwing pointy sticks at other members of the food chain, my family—and stomach—may grow impatient. So instead, I am a developer. I do have my own little cave where I chip away at the code that is my livelihood, like my Neanderthal ancestors chipping away at an obsidian blade. He was a specialist too, cousin Og. Making blades, spear points and other hurty-type tools for his clan. I wonder though, when someone came to him and said, “Hey, that knife you […]
