There’s a lot of talk and movement this year around local meetups (as well as WordCamps) and I’ve been finding more and more great examples of local communities that are going all-out for their people and providing them as much value and resources as possible.
For example, I stumbled upon one of New York City’s local communities @ WPNYC and it was neat to see what they’ve implemented for their community. For instance, they have created an entire BuddyPress community site for their members which is active daily:
They’ve got anything from the ability to ask for help and basic troubleshooting of your WordPress-powered site to local (and not-so-local) news, and even a job board.
The site was actually created and launched during one of their local meetups and has since been redesigned by Steve Bruner, and two of their members; Krista Gonzalez and Rindy Portfolio.
I think more and more local communities this year will band together like WPNYC and start creating these local sites in addition to their official Meetup.com site.
Are you a part of a local area Meetup that’s going above and beyond the Meetup.com space? I’d love to hear your story and see your community website and portal. Hit me up in the comments!
