WordPress-specific tutorials, workshops, and other educational resources are becoming increasingly more popular. This could be because WordPress is one of the most developer-friendly Content Management Systems, or, perhaps, because it’s the most preferred blogging platform. Whatever the reason, the WordPress ecosystem is growing—and with it WordPress education has blossomed into a flourishing niche.
So, what are some of the resources available?
WordPress professional Bob Dunn recently entered into this sphere by founding an online tutorial website. Now called Bobwp.com, the site includes all of the blog content from Dunn’s old site, plus the content from bobWP Tutorials.
The tutorials provides beginner and average users with a localized, constantly updated option for learning WordPress basics, Child Themes, Genesis, and more.
To learn more about this education resource, I reached out to Dunn.
Dunn began working on bobWP Tutorials last November. But its initial incubation was several months prior to that. Dunn said,
I spent months researching the needs, defining my exact target market, and deciding what direction I wanted to take with the site.
Dunn went on to explain how the start of bobWP Tutorials began with the realization that, over the course of many years, he had established a community that thoroughly enjoyed, and benefited from, his WordPress training style.
Additionally, a much larger reason was the massive hole he saw in the space of WordPress education. There were few options that enabled WordPress users to learn how to do something themselves in a code-free fashion.”People want to do things themselves, but there are limitations in their knowledge that prevent them from achieving these goals,” Dunn said. These tutorials helps alleviate these pains.
With these thoughts and experiences driving him, Dunn established bobWP Tutorials, and on February 19 it was released. Following the release, Dunn merged his blog, bobwp.com, with bobWP Tutorials to create a new bobwp.com site—enabling quick and easy access to both resources.
Defining characteristics of bobWP Tutorials
bobWP Tutorials takes a personal approach by using a conversational, laid-back teaching style. This facilitates a unique and effective learning method. “I’ve been told by many people that they love my videos just because of the style,” Dunn said.
Another defining characteristic of bobWP Tutorials is his insider approach—meaning he actually provides members learn the ins-and-outs of certain themes. Dunn stated:
I haven’t found a lot of online tutorials focused on helping users make the right decision on a theme the first time around. Staying within the framework of Genesis Child Themes and WooThemes, I help members explore different themes and learn how to set up their chosen theme.
The tutorials are offered with or without audio, and text highlights are available as a time-saving option. The highlights include screenshots—so you can more thoroughly understand the main points. Dunn’s approach extends past the basic “how to” into the “why” zone. Dunn said,
Members tell me that they appreciate understanding the why of what they are doing, because it helps them put each sequence of learning activities into context and get a sense of how everything is tied together.
The typical bobWP Tutorial member is an average-skilled WordPress user with a distaste for code. The tutorials are curated towards those who want to do it themselves without overcomplicated guidance—and bobWP Tutorial does just that, Dunn indicated.
This is a viable option for beginner and average WordPress users who are looking for a unique, hands-on learning experience. Dunn concluded by saying,
My personal experience in training thousands of users and, as a bonus, my knowledge from years of web design, marketing and social media expertise. Everything is there to get our members up and running.
As far as WordPress education, it seems that we will continue to see more and more options in the future. WordPress requires constantly evolving and updated educational resources, and it seems like bobWP Tutorials provides just that. Try it out, and let us know what you think!
