The WordPress Foundation is suing TheWordPressHelpers.com for trademark infringement. The lawsuit targets the use of “WordPress” in the domain, which is forbidden unless permission is granted by the WordPress Foundation—the organization responsible for protecting the WordPress trademarks. The rules couldn’t be more clear, as outlined in the WordPress Foundation Trademark Policy: “Permission from the WordPress Foundation is required to use the WordPress or WordCamp name or logo as part of any project, product, service, domain or company name.” As any experienced WordPress user already knows, you cannot use “WordPress” in your top-level domain: “Under no circumstances is it permitted to […]
How to Do Market Research for Websites and Blogs
I’m sorry to be the one to tell you this, but your website is basically invisible. No, don’t worry your server isn’t down—I can see it just fine when I type in the URL. However, in the grand scheme of things, your WordPress website is a tiny spec on the vast canvas of the Internet. WordPress and other technologies make it easy for anyone, anywhere to start a blog or website. That means that there is now more competition than ever. In fact, estimates suggest that there are currently almost one billion websites in existence. In 2014, that number grew by about […]
Your Assumptions Are Wrong: A Lesson from WordCamp Denver
Three WordCamps in three weekends? Seems a bit crazy but I did it: Miami, Orange County, and this past weekend, Denver. Here’s what I learned from Denver. Break Free of Your Assumptions “Your assumptions are your windows on the world. Scrub them off every once in a while, or the light won’t come in.” – Isaac Asimov Our brains love to take complex ideas and simplify them so they are easier to understand. From what I’ve read, it is a primary driver in our species’ ability to survive. This is where our assumptions come from. Problem is, assumptions can be hard to break, and can […]
“Just Do It” Says Shia LaBeouf At WordCamp Orange County
It all started with an origami crane. I meticulously assembled it while waiting in line for lunch. This origami crane was the entry in a raffle for an iPad mini, offered by SiteGround hosting; but the prize wasn’t what I was after. I honestly didn’t even care what my crane would look like when I was finished. Instead, I enjoyed the process of making the crane. I’ll come back to this crane in a moment, but as WordCamp Orange County carried along, I saw one theme underlying the entire event. It was passion. Passion for the Community The WordPress community is full […]

Interview with Patrick Rauland and Matt Medeiros on Product Shipping, Scaling, and Validation
For today’s article on validating and scaling WordPress products, I asked two seemingly simple questions of two people whose opinions I respect on the matter. While I’m really proud of the resulting article and how I used their words to make my point, I feel like you, the reader, are missing out on the incredibly detailed and well thought out responses they gave to my questions. So, we are sharing the complete transcripts of those interviews below. Patrick Rauland on Product Release Patrick Rauland is the Product Manager for WooCommerce. You can find him on Twitter @BFTrick. Q: What steps does your […]
Fear and Loathing in Miami (WordCamp Edition)
Torque asked me to cover WordCamp Miami. I got the email basically as I was getting off my plane in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and instantly, I felt like Johnny Depp’s character in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (minus the copious amount of drugs and Benicio Del Toro as my lawyer). This was only my second WordCamp, and the only other I’d been to was tiny in comparison. So I didn’t know what to expect, let alone what to write about. Yes, during every talk, I took pages of notes, and lots of pictures, but why rehash what everyone said? […]
Happy Birthday, WordPress: Celebrating 12 Great Years
Yesterday, WordPress celebrated its 12th birthday. To mark the occasion, I’m going to take a look at some of the biggest milestones in WordPress’s twelve-year history. To date, the excellent team of core contributors have turned out 26 major WordPress updates. These updates have taken WordPress from a humble blogging software right to the global CMS superstar it is today. Every update has contributed to this, but today I’ve picked out ten of the most important ones. If you want to see a chronological timeline of WordPress’s history, read on! I’ll be showing you when the most important features and functionality […]
The Best WordPress Swag and Gear for the True Fan
It’s no secret that WordPressers are everywhere in the world. While you are reading this, literally millions of people are publishing content and otherwise taking care of their web presence through the WordPress platform. However, where are all of those people in real life? Can you spot them on the street? Is there something particularly WordPressy about us that you can make out from afar? Not that I know of. Shame, though. After all, being part of the WordPress community is a great thing that, in my opinion, we should all do our best to shout from the rooftops. Yet, […]
A Glimpse Inside the Dark World of SEO
If you read Internet marketing blogs or follow SEO news, you’ll notice story after story about how crazy the SEO world is getting. One week, Google says your site needs an SSL certificate to rank higher. Not long after, it says that your ranking will drop if you’re not mobile friendly. But beneath all of this, there is a strange story, one that almost seems like it’s from the pages of a George Orwell novel, involving a large monolithic organization, a group of rebel SEOs trying to outsmart the organization, and a group of citizens none the wiser to what’s going on. It’s the […]
