Daily Theme & Plugin Roundup – 2.12.2013
There are tons of new and updated plugins to share on today’s roundup. There’s even 3 new themes you should take a look at too. I don’t think it broke our previous record, but it sure was close. Here they are:
10 Reasons Why Automattic is a Model Startup
It’s no secret that we’re super-fans of Automattic, Inc. and WordPress. We kind of bleed this stuff, you know? And we’re not alone in that as many of you are fanatics as well! But we try our very best to be critical of what we report on and unbiased in our approach – it’s a line we toe every single day but the tension, as they say, is a good one. One of the things that I do besides edit this blog and write like it’s going out of style is help my team grow as a startup and organization […]
Pinterest for Commercial Theme Customer Showcase?
As commercial theme providers continue to innovate and experiment with their business models and find solutions that meet their demanding customer needs I like to canvas and call-out implementations that are both creative and clever. For instance, many commercial theme providers have a customer showcase where they share some of their “best” customers who have developed or designed off the base theme into a stunning beauty and wonder. Or, they will share some marquee clients and customers who are either big name individuals or companies that are using their product. All of this is with the intent of not only […]
Making a Blog Profitable and Sustainable: Niche and Scale
As we continue to think about how we are going to grow WP Daily in a way that makes sense for both us, as a business, and our users and community, we’re taking a critical look at existing monetization models as well as beginning to strategize about creating new ones. The fact is that blog monetization isn’t anything new and most advertising and revenue generation has been well documented as well as tested and vetted so I’m not going to hash out the extensive different models and whether or not they will work for us but I did want to […]
Daily Theme & Plugin Roundup – 2.11.2013
How was everyone’s Monday? Mine was long yet productive day. Great way to start the work week! It also seems to be a productive day for the authors of these new themes and plugins in today’s roundup. Check them out!
Meditating on The 4 Freedoms of GPL (and Free Software)
We’re gearing up for an incredible WordCamp here in Atlanta and because I’m part of the organizing team I have to review nearly everything that goes into making this thing “work” – and it’s a lot of work, believe you me! But it’s an incredible amount of fun and I’m having a blast with Judi Knight, Carel Bekker, and Russell Fair as we build this thing together with a lot of community help. One of the things that has been interesting in the launch of WordCamp is the adherence to the GPL – which we all know has recently caused a […]
hhhhold – Placeholders for Your Design, Dev
John Brown submitted an announcement about his first ever WordPress plugin and I thought it was neat enough to get some press here, especially since it is his first, which is a big deal – so congrats on that John! What is hhhhold? It’s simple: A placeholder for random content to stress test a design. Placeholder scripts aren’t new and neither is Brown’s execution here but I like how they are being created and presented from user-generated content. It’s simple to use too with the following size parameters:
An Interview With Will Norris of Google Open Source
Will Norris, who we’ve briefly highlighted before, is the subject of our interview today. He’s a long time WordPress user and is a strong proponent for Open Source development. Did we mention he’s a Googler? Congratulate Will on his commit access to WPAndroid Trunk by leaving a comment after his interview because today he’s our Word Person of Interest (WPOI):
Premium Themes: Buy Them Based on Community
There are so many great themes out there. How on earth do you choose the right one? I think it’s almost like buying a home or a car really. You need to come up with your list of most desired features, nice-to-haves, and most likely price. This list is different for most, but there’s something I think should be on everyone’s list that is most likely over-looked. Community: I think that community should be at the top of the list. I would argue that it should be in your top 3 at least. For me personally it looks like this: SEO […]
