Though WordCamps have always been family-friendly, some have been taking things a step further and creating activities just for kids. This is a great option for parents who want to bring their kids along, but it’s even more beneficial for the children themselves. Introducing children to WordPress early is a great way to open their eyes to technology and coding. David Laietta, WordCamp Orlando organizer, sees kids’ activities just another way to make WordCamps even more inclusive. “This can be improved by offering up ways to get the younger members of our community more involved,” he said. “As well as give […]
Introduction To Term Meta In WordPress
WordPress 4.4 introduced several new features for developers. The infrastructure for the WordPress REST API got the most attention by far, but there are some other notable new features that are worth a closer look. One in particular is taxonomy term metadata. In this article, I will discuss what term meta is and how to use it. The need for term meta is made apparent by the wide number of solutions that existed in the past to approximate this feature via various means. For example, Pods has supported custom fields for taxonomy terms for a long time. Previously, those custom […]
JavaScript: Is Deep The Right Goal?
I’m very excited to be a part of WordCamp Miami‘s “Learning Javascript, Deeply” track. The fact that five of the seven talks are on JavaScript frameworks, however, is reflective of a troubling reaction I see to Matt Mullenweg’s call for WordPress developers to “learn JavaScript deeply.” JavaScript frameworks like Backbone, which is what WordPress uses, are great ways to make complex JavaScript tasks easy. But it would be foolish to think that learning a JavaScript MVC framework is learning JavaScript deeply. JavaScript: Is Deep The Right Goal? Don’t get me wrong, I’m giving two talks on AngularJS because I think […]
WP REST API Stalled
A two-hour WP REST API team meeting on Slack ended yesterday with the devs at a standstill and the API delayed. The group had gathered to discuss the existing post, term, user, and comment endpoints. The team is investigating handling these issues in a plugin instead of delaying the merge with the core. The biggest issues with these four items are password-protected posts, autosaves, and meta handling. At the end of September, Ryan McCue announced the merge proposal for the API, saying the infrastructure will be merged with 4.4, which it has been, and the endpoints will be taken care of for 4.5. However, some […]
Help Grow A WordPress Presence In Karachi, Pakistan
WordPress takes up more than 25 percent of the Internet. This stat is a good representation of how the community of WordPress helped it grow bigger. Pakistan has been a bit slow in keeping up with the pace of the growing WordPress community around the globe. However, things are about to change. Few WordPress fanatics from all over Pakistan have taken up the responsibility to take WordPress in Pakistan to the next level. For this, we need your support and love. We are in Karachi and have already initiated the process of making WordPress easier for everyone. We had our […]
Crowdsourcing Project Seeks Stats On The REST API In Production
Human Made co-founder Joe Hoyle is crowdsourcing stats on the REST API in an effort to bring more awareness and to better understand the different developers and sites leveraging it. “A somewhat unknown amount of developers and sites use the REST API, but are often not vocal about it,” Hoyle told Torque. “We often hear a lot about what plugins and products make use of the REST API, but not so much about what production sites are running it.” The crowdsourcing effort comes right before the REST API meeting happening later today. These stats will provide a better understanding of […]
First Annual WorldWide Contributor’s Day A Success
January 30-31 marked the first annual Worldwide Contributor’s Day, and this month’s theme was support. The objective was to answer 20 requests on the Support Team tickets. People were encouraged to get together with WordPress users and developers in their surrounding area. The turnout was outstanding. People from all over the world came together to work on requests. WordPress full stack developer and core contributor Ahmad Awais gathered with 14 other Pakistani WordPressers to answer 164 tickets. In fact, Pakistan answered the most requests after the US. “I am a core contributor for WordPress and have been contributing to the core […]
Deep JavaScript: WordPress REST API And JavaScript Promises
When Matt Mullenweg told everyone to learn JavaScript, deeply, the community went crazy trying to decipher what this means for WordPress. What should you learn? Should it be a framework, a library, or just vanilla JavaScript? By now if you have been inclined to pick up anything, you are ready to go deeper. Even if you just start out learning a simple library like jQuery, once you get past the basic animations and fades, you will want to learn more. A few years ago, Promises were natively added to JavaScript. Before we get into Promises, let me first explain the […]
Devs Dominate A Day Of REST Attendee List
A Day of REST, a conference focused entirely around the REST API, was held yesterday at Conway Hall in London. According to event organizer Petya Raykovska, 221 people from all over the world attended the conference. “We had representatives from many WordPress companies — Automattic, 10up, XWP, required, Alley Interactive, Pragmatic, and Inpsyde,” Raykovska told Torque. “We also had representatives from big-name clients like the New York Times, Time Inc. UK, Condé Nast, and more.” A follow-up survey went out late last night to gain feedback on the conference. “The feedback we’ve been getting has been great so far — people loved the […]
Working With Responsive Images In WordPress Core
Responsive design has been around for quite many years by now. And with the advent of WordPress 4.4 in December last year, responsive images became a part of WordPress core. What does this imply for WordPress users and developers? In this article, we will be discussing what is meant by responsive images in WordPress core, and why you should be happy about it. Working With Responsive Images In WordPress Core Background While responsive images have only recently found their way in WordPress core, the concept of responsive images in itself is not new to the world of WordPress. Prior to version […]
