WordPress 4.4 was released earlier this month, and it came loaded with new features and enhancements. We now have responsive images, better embeds, phase one of the REST API, and of course, a new WordPress theme: Twenty Sixteen. So, how does the new WordPress theme fare? In this post, I will be taking a closer look at the Twenty Sixteen theme. Twenty Sixteen At first look, Twenty Sixteen does not seem to deviate much from its predecessor in terms of genre. It is a clean and minimal theme, with a good deal of white space, clean typography, and responsive layout […]
Automattic Could Go Public In 2016, Report Says
Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com, is among 36 “unicorns” that could go public in 2016, CB Insights said in a report released yesterday. The 2016 Tech IPO Pipeline states there are more than 80 private tech companies in the U.S. currently valued at $1 billion or more, and notes that Automattic is among the 36 companies with the greatest momentum. Automattic joined the billion-dollar club in 2014 when it raised $160 million in Series C Funding, which raised its valuation to $1.16 billion. Along with Automattic, “the unicorn club” includes other well-known, fast-growth companies, such as Airbnb, Snapchat, GitHub, Slack, and Uber. While Automattic’s inclusion on this list doesn’t […]
17 Of The Best Code Editors For WordPress Developers And Users
Just like a painter needs a brush, a blacksmith her hammer, and carpenter his saw, WordPressers need their own set of tools. While we have many different WordPress development tools at our disposal, most of the work happens inside a simple text editor. Whether you are a full-on plugin or theme developer or “only” an advanced user, we need code editors all the time: Configuring core files, changing styles, editing template files, you name it — a good chunk of our work is modifying lines of code. Therefore, it’s only good and proper that we use the best tool at […]
How To Learn JavaScript As A WordPress Developer
Like many WordPress developers, I started learning JavaScript before I really even knew what JavaScript was. By “learning JavaScript,” I mean that I Googled how to make dynamic changes to the CSS on my page, discovered that jQuery was the option, and later found out that jQuery was a JavaScript library, and so on. WordPress is a safe space from which we can explore the different technologies surrounding it to improve our sites and create more dynamic experiences for our users. This includes JavaScript. In Matt Mullenweg’s State of the Word this year, which I was lucky enough to attend, […]
Use Cases Of The WP REST API (WordCamp US Edition)
Roughly 2,000 WordPress developers, designers, bloggers, and enthusiasts flooded the streets of downtown Philadelphia last week to attend the inaugural WordCamp US. The two-day event was held at the Pennsylvania Convention Center on December 4-5 and featured more than 100 different sessions. For some, WordCamp US started early with The Community Summit on December 2-3 and ended late with the contributor day on December 6. Everyone at WCUS was buzzing about APIs — and, with the inclusion of the WP REST API infrastructure in WordPress 4.4, APIs will remain at the forefront in the conversation around the future of WordPress. […]
Tips For Designing Mobile eCommerce Apps
As of lately, eCommerce has grown at a very rapid pace, with more and more users shopping for their favorite products online. In fact, what began as a trend meant mostly for purchasing books and that occasional gadget online, has now evolved to a tradition, with almost every other buyer browsing for products on the internet, and new eCommerce stores coming up with each passing day. Beyond that, it has been quite a while since mobile devices have overtaken the desktop, and smartphones and tablets are now our preferred medium for browsing the internet. As such, most websites are turning […]
WP Engine Prompts Customers To Reset Passwords After Security Exposure
WP Engine late Wednesday sent its customers an urgent security notification regarding an “exposure involving some of our customers’ credentials.” The company urged its customers to immediately update the passwords associated with their WP Engine accounts. According to the security notice, there is no evidence to suggest that this information has been used inappropriately. “Out of an abundance of caution, we are proactively taking security measures across our entire customer base. Kinsta’s Battle Royale: HHVM Vs. PHP 7
The official stable release of PHP 7 shipped right before the release of WordPress 4.4. Kinsta, a hosting company, ran a test with PHP 5.6, PHP 7, and HHVM and found that HHVM handles the most transactions per second. Though the results leaned in HHVM’s favor, speed isn’t the only factor to consider when choosing a scripting language. After a four-day test, their findings pointed to HHVM as the faster scripting language. The test was run on a bare metal server, and while some details of the test sites were shared, the entry didn’t account for any other plugins or themes running […]

5 Reasons To Start A Plugin Business
WordPress plugin businesses are incredible. I’ve seen developers code a plugin over a week, launch on the WordPress Plugin Directory for free, create a premium version, and a few months later, have a thriving business making a sizable income. These “mini tech startups” amaze me. So I decided to analyze them a bit and see just why they are the perfect business to launch…and then tell you why it may not be that easy. 1. They Are Lean Startups Eric Ries coined the term “Lean Startup”, borrowed from principles of lean manufacturing. In short, it is a set of principles […]
