It seems just a few days ago I was updating client sites to WordPress 3.6, then 3.6.1 … 3.7, and 3.7.1, now 3.8 … and with the newer versions comes automatic security and bug fix updates that can happen at any time. This is progress, and this is good! However, without reliable backups, any update can prove to be disastrous if there are code conflicts with themes or plugins. Note: if you are hosting on WP Engine (which I happen to be)—or another hosting company that offers automatic site backups—then you have no need for backup plugins. You have daily backups to […]
Will 2014 Be the Year of WordPress Tuck-ins and Roll-ups?
Like with most great things in the WordPress community, it started with WebDev Studios. Two founders, writing code and sometimes writing books. And a friend of theirs, Lisa Sabin-Wilson, also writing some code and writing books. And then they merged. If you were at Pressnomics this past year, you heard Lisa’s version of the story. And it was compelling. And I’m sure it made more than one small company think about its own position in the ecosystem. Should they partner with someone else? Should they merge? But how do you go about doing this? The questions were plentiful, I’m sure. […]
The Past, Present and Future of DesktopServer
Stephen Carnham has been a good friend for many years now. I first met him when a few of us down here in San Diego were wanting to start Advanced WordPress. Having come from a long and extensive career in Software Engineering, he helped bring a new level of code understanding and complexity to an already advanced bunch of guys. Stephen first started DesktopServer out of his home after many years in the WordPress world. His company ServerPress is not only expanding to three-plus, but is seriously disrupting local WordPress development across the board, and simplifying the lives of many in the process. […]
WordPress 3.8 – What’s New and Why It Matters
Do you use WordPress? If so, your world is about to change—and you’re not alone. Recent statistics show WordPress now powers close to 20% of the web and controls close to 60% of the Content Management System market. So when big changes are rolling out, there’s a lot at stake. This week’s release of WordPress 3.8 named “Parker” after jazz legend Charlie Parker shows that the platform (and its developers) take this responsibility seriously and aim to further simplify web publishing for everyone. You can download it right now from WordPress.org or upgrade your existing WordPress site directly from the […]
WordSesh 2 Underway
WordSesh 2 is well underway, with over 17 and a half hours already under its belt. WordPressers have been tuning in from all over the world for 24 straight hours of WordPress immersion (although to be perfectly honest, some of us did take sleep breaks). Here are some of the highlights so far. The DradSesh The DradCast hosts Brad Williams and Dre Armeda kicked it off in style, along with WordSesh 2 organizer Scott Basgaard. The WordSesh 2 Rap debuted, and we think it was even better than the first WordSesh rap. More than 100 people joined the the chatroom, and Scott announced […]
