Doc’s WordPress News Drop is a weekly report on the most pressing WordPress news. When the news drops, I will pick it up and deliver it right to you. Many folks ask us about how and when they can use the WordPress logo, so in this week’s News Drop, Doc helps break it down into a few simple rules. “When can you use the WordPress trademark?” Love WordPress News, but hate reading? This is Doc Pop’s News Drop! In 2015, the WordPress Foundation sued The WordPress Helpers for trademark infringement. The interesting thing is that WordPress Helpers were using the […]

The Rise of the (Lame) Theme Directory
I love the fact that people spend time to send up news and tips every single day (if not every single minute) – we spend a lot of time sifting through the tips and vetting them for value for our readers. What I’m not happy about is all the genuinely crappy (*stronger word available here*) sites that we get pitched that have almost no value to us nor our readers nor to the human race at large. Ok, sure, being a bit over-the-top on that last line but the point is that I’m tired of seeing copy-cat sites regurgitate failed strategies […]
A Trademark For Your WordPress Business?
I’ve only trademarked one other thing for another business and that was because it was incredibly obvious that we should – it was a term that was previously trademarked and part of a domain URL that we purchased for 5-figures. We lucked out in that the previous owner of the trademark didn’t renew their registration and it had expired literally months before we started looking into it. I want to clearly state that there are distinct differences between all of them and that it’s worth knowing what you’re talking about when you start jumping into the muddy waters that is licensing, the GPL, ownership, and developing a WordPress-centric business. At the center of all of this is really the WordPress Foundation so by establishing this we can clearly take a look […]
