For developers, the WordPress world is full of opportunity. Creating plugins and themes, and building awesome websites are just a few of the possibilities. Becoming a WordPress developer, however, requires a great deal of time, dedication, and practice, and isn’t a decision one should take lightly. To better grapple with the hard work and commitment that goes into becoming a developer, I reached out to Nick Haskins — Developer and CEO at aesopstoryengine.com — to understand his personal evolution, both as a developer and an entrepreneur. Q: Could you talk a little about how you’ve seen the WordPress plugin and theme industry evolve over the years? […]
Should You Accept Comments on Your WordPress Site?
No website should exist in beautiful isolation. As can be seen by the rise of Twitter over the last few years: people want to interact over the Internet. They want to engage in conversation, to be heard, and to feel like their opinion matters. This desire to interact extends to the websites they spend their time reading — this is especially true for blogs. For WordPress users, the main source of interaction will be through the comments left underneath the articles you publish. This has actually been quite an interesting area of debate recently, with CopyBlogger announcing in March that […]
Improving Third-Party API Performance in WordPress with the WP-TLC-Transient Library
Minimizing page load time is incredibly important for both UX and SEO. We spend tons of time obsessing over getting our code and servers optimized to serve our sites as fast as possible, but once you incorporate data from external APIs, you may be putting your site’s load times at the mercy of an external server that you have no control over. For these reasons, it’s important to leverage a caching system […]

Offering support for WordPress plugins is a tricky business. I consider it extremely important for plugin developers to offer some level of support, but it can be hard to figure out just how much. Fortunately, there have been several conversations surrounding support. Tom McFarlin in particular, wrote a series of posts discussing support options for both free and premium plugins. I think it’s worthwhile to keep the conversation going, and take a fresh look at these. Free Support Support for your plugins requires an investment of your own time and resources, and no small one at that. But here’s the […]
