We’ve been called out a couple times already about not having a responsive layout here on WP Daily and it’s worth us addressing directly to our community that is obviously viewing our site here via mobile devices (which is a great thing!). The reason we don’t have a mobile ready / responsive layout is quite simple: We decided in late November that we’d rather launch early (before the holiday season and break) and test our “sea legs” sotospeak and begin to gather feedback from the community instead of launching later and having a more “robust” and “complete” package. We did […]
Building a WordPress-Centric Plugin Business
Pippin Wiliamson recently has shared his thoughts on how he’s managed to create a successful and growing WordPress Plugin business and how it’s becoming an even more viable model: I have been doing WordPress plugin development as a business for about two years now. When I first started, by releasing my very first plugin on Code Canyon, it was very much a side project that brought in a little side residual income. Today, I make 100% of my needed income and more off of plugin development. The fact that he’s making 100% of his income is fantastic and is the […]
Your WordPress Team Reps for 2013
Jane Wells has finalized the counts and votes for Team Reps for each of the areas and it looks like we’ve got some final numbers and names for those that will be representing the WordPress community and development in 2013. We are still waiting on a few areas for commitment and finalization but we’ll update this list when those go through! Congrats to those that have been chosen and a big THANK YOU since your time and commitment to us and the greater WordPress community really matters a lot. And here they are:
The WordPress Weekend Roundup
This has been a pretty light week in terms of news and breaking stories which is natural because of the holidays. I actually appreciate it because it makes my life a bit easier as an editors job is really never quite done and never really stops, especially if you’re attempting to launch a new venture in the news vertical. Which is what we’re trying to do! So my team has taken some time off but we’re working (just like a lot of you) and keeping our eyes on our inboxes. It’s not incredibly ideal but it is what it is, […]
Could WordPress Blogging Be More Simple a'la Feathers?
Although we’re passionate about all-things WordPress we keep an eye out on the competition and especially up-and-comers that seek to challenge the dominance of our beloved application. But it’s not that I’m against competition; in fact, I’m all for it because it moves the needle of innovation and it forces us to rethink and reconsider our options for the best publishing platform available to us. Things like Feathers which isn’t quite available yet to the general public but which suggests that publishing to the web could be made even more simple:
Participad: Realtime Collaboration for Your Site's Content
Now here’s a neat solution that you may not have known that you needed (especially if you’re an editor for a multiuser blog or site): Realtime collaboration on those blog posts! Participad does it through being powered by Etherpad Lite. For those already aware, Etherpad is an open source online editor created via Node.js that allows such neat things like realtime editing in a collaborative setting. Honestly, I’m drooling over this thing since we’re trying to figure out our perfect editorial workflow for WP Daily here. Would realtime editing and collaboration be of use for our authors? Jury is out but I’m […]
Jeff Starr Launches WP-Mix, Code Snippets and Tutorials
Jeff Starr of DigWP has announced the release of a new simple site that will showcase code snippets, tutorials, and other helpful WordPress-related development and design techniques. It’s called WP-Mix. It might be the next best resource for your continued development of a site or a chance to experiment even more with WordPress. This isn’t the only snippet site dedicated to WordPress related code but this one is laid out cleanly and has a nice card/tab layout that may appeal to certain people over just searching through archives.
5 Things to Blog About Before the New Year
This is one of the best times to do some quality writing as you may have an extended period of time off and some clarity of mind during this break and holiday season. We want to not just be a source of news and information surrounding WordPress – we want to inspire more people to publish online, publish more consistently, help create their own personal or professional brands, or to assist in generating great content for those that need it most. As such we’re going to start creating challenges for our community here to contribute to your motivation to write.
bbPress Year in Review 2012
Like BuddyPress, bbPress has released their year in review which has also undergone a significant clean-up effort. Like BuddyPress, a few things were retired such as the plugin repository which is an obvious choice for a more integrated play with WordPress. We collectively saw the 2.1 and 2.2 releases this year sporting high-demand features like better theme compatibility, multiple user roles, private and hidden forums (a big one!), BuddyPress/Akismet and other integrations. As we shared earlier this month, Jennifer Dodd received upgraded access and the community as a whole is getting even more close-knit. It’s been a year of growth and […]
BuddyPress Year in Review 2012
BuddyPress has recently shared their annual year in review stating that 2012 has been a year of clean-up, revision, and streamlining where now the entire platform runs on a much smaller set of plugins with the intention and now ability of supporting the project much more properly. In addition, if you’ve been tracking with the project, the group forums were retired gracefully and they managed to release both the 1.5 and 1.6 this past year. With a new 4th core committer, Raymond Hoh, it looks to be an exciting year for BuddyPress and the continued growth of a social platform that […]
