The first WordCamp Asia, which was set to happen later this month, has been canceled. The announcement post cites the concerns around COVID-19, more commonly known as “Coronavirus.” Organizers will refund all tickets purchased, and work with hotels to ensure full refunds for anyone who booked. The team also provided a flight cancellation fee waiver letter community members can use to try to get refunds from airlines. Automattic Gets $3 Million at $3 Billion Valuation from Salesforce
Automattic just closed a Series D funding round of $3 million from one investor, Salesforce Ventures. According to Automattic founder, Matt Mullenweg, this investment will allow the company to stay the course and honor the current roadmap. For Automattic, the funding will allow us to accelerate our roadmap (perhaps by double) and scale up our existing products—including WordPress.com, WordPress VIP, WooCommerce, Jetpack, and (in a few days when it closes) Tumblr. Automattic Acquires Tumblr
In its biggest acquisition to date, Automattic Inc. has purchased Tumblr along with its 200 employees. Automattic CEO, Matt Mullenweg told the Wall Street Journal that executives will try to find ways to merge Tumblr’s functionality with WordPress.com’s. According to Post Status, Mullenweg’s initial goals for the website are to: 1. Move infrastructure off Verizon.2. Support same APIs on both WP.com and Tumblr.3. Switch backend to be WP.4. It was announced today that Digital Experience Platform WP Engine will acquire hosting and management company Flywheel. Major Issue with WordPress VIP Go Causes Sites to Go Down
WordPress powers over 30 percent of the web, including some of the Internet’s biggest enterprise sites. On Tuesday, WordPress VIP Go experienced an issue that left multiple sites with nothing but a photo of a succulent. At 17:27 UTC, WordPress VIP announced ongoing issues with the platform, citing 503 errors and missing theme files. This caused many sites to experience the default theme.
