Version control is a non-negotiable part of any serious development project, but widespread adoption of this technique in the world of WordPress has been somewhat spotty to date. While the platform’s core has used Subversion for some time, sites out in the wild are often put together with little or no version control in place. VersionPress arrived on the scene in 2014 with a vision of bringing an integrated WordPress version control solution to the masses. It’s been making steady progress in that direction ever since, and the software’s recent transition into a free open source project marks an interesting inflection […]
7 Takeaways From WordCamp San Diego 2016
In April I attended WordCamp San Diego at NTC at Liberty Station. In this article, I’m going to share some of my experiences and takeaways from the event. First, let me thank the good people at WordImpress, makers of the Give plugin, for helping to make my trip possible. I’d also like to thank all of the organizers, speakers, and volunteers who made the event possible. WordPress Fandom Is Strong In his keynote, Chris Lema talked about how the WordPress project held a tenth birthday party for WordPress. Not only that, but people actually showed up to the party, and an […]
Why It’s Time for Agencies to Fully Embrace WordPress for Client Work
Despite the high profile success of companies such as 10up, some agencies are still reluctant to fully commit to WordPress as a solution for clients. The platform’s roots as a blogging engine (and small business CMS) still leave many doubting whether it’s the right technology to build an entire project or team around. While historical doubts about WordPress in an agency environment were not without justification, the software is more than ready to rise to the challenge these days — and an increasingly impressive number of top-flight agencies have moved large parts of their development efforts over to it. In this piece, we’ll […]

*** Note: At this time the WP Mobile Detector plugin has been patched. Users should update to the most current version of the plugin as soon as possible. A vulnerability in WP Mobile Detector is being exploited in the wild and users are urged to remove the plugin as soon as possible, as there is currently no available update. “The vulnerability is very easy to exploit, all the attacker needs to do is send a request to resize.php or timthumb.php (yes, timthumb, in this case it just includes resize.php), inside the plugin directory with the backdoor URL,” Sucuri reported today. The exploit stems […]

Three WordPressers Share Their Stories
In just 13 years, WordPress has evolved from a blogging service into a full-service platform that companies like The New York Times and Wired trust with their websites. Like all open-source software, the beating heart of WordPress is the community. Without it, it certainly wouldn’t be where it is today. Today we highlight three different WordPress stories that show exactly how the CMS is changing lives. Tom Ewer Tom Ewer is the Editor-in-Chief and Founder of WordCandy, an online publishing agency that specializes in producing content for WordPress businesses. Ewer first started writing about WordPress back May 2011 on his blog, […]
