A look at Twenty Fifteen, the new WordPress default theme
Christmas is coming early in WordPressland this year, with WordPress 4.1 slated for release early this month. As exciting as this piece of news already is, it gets even better. The developers are putting together an extra present: A new default theme by the name of Twenty Fifteen. As most of you probably know, the release of the new default WordPress theme has been a time-honored tradition of the past five years. Starting with Twenty Ten, these themes have been a show of WordPress development best practices, state-of-the-art theme making, and great parents for child themes. So, in the spirit of children who […]
Getting schooled in WordPress security at Sucuri
Like most of us, I consider myself pretty good at doing WordPress. I don’t develop themes or plugins, and I don’t know a lick of PHP — but I am a wizard in the WordPress dashboard! Don’t we all love setting up a brand new install? It never loses its magic: searching for the perfect theme, tweaking all the settings, and perfecting the permalinks. However, in all my years of working within the environment, nothing felt more pressing than the need to learn all about WordPress security. So when I recently joined Sucuri to help them with their content, I […]
The ultimate guide to Jetpack
When it comes to WordPress plugins, we all have our favorites. It would probably take you only a few seconds to come up with at least five plugins you install on virtually every website you create. You little nerd, you! I’m no different. Among my all-time favorites is Jetpack by WordPress.com. Initially installed on one of my sites for its excellent stats and analytics feature, by now it has a fixed position on my go-to list of plugins. However, even though I use it on a regular basis, the other day I realized that my knowledge of Jetpack is not […]
Improving WordPress plugin development with Composer
I recently released a plugin comprised almost entirely of code pulled from composer libraries. The plugin’s main file (besides the header and license) just includes the composer autoloader and the plugin’s activation function. That’s it. The rest of the plugin’s functionality comes from four composer libraries: three of which I wrote, and all of which are easily reusable in other plugins or other types of projects. That practical level of code reusability is one of the most exciting parts about integrating Composer into my workflow. In a recent article for Torque, I gave a general introduction to using Composer with WordPress. […]

Google Officially Releases Mobile Friendly Labels
Yesterday Google officially announced the latest addition to its search engine results pages: mobile friendly labels. With the number of mobile users constantly on the rise, it is little surprise the latest changes were implemented with mobile users in mind. Creating a mobile-friendly experience is hardly groundbreaking — webmasters have long been embracing responsive designs to cater to mobile users, and Google already penalizes websites that aren’t optimized for mobile devices. However, the latest announcement signals a serious commitment to mobile users, and this could have repercussions for the millions of WordPress users around the globe. What are the changes? […]
Building a loyal community by adding a forum to your website
If you are able to build a loyal following for your website, success usually follows: fans of your site are more likely to share your content on social media, visit regularly, and buy whatever it is you’re selling. As a result, building a community around your website is a good long term target for all aspiring webmasters — which is easier said than done, of course! How do you build this community? Awesome content and a user-friendly website are musts, but you also need to cultivate a higher level of engagement among visitors. Encouraging an active comments section is a […]
Fixing the White Screen of Death
Whoever wrote the now famous quote “there are no certainties in life beyond death and taxes” clearly never had a WordPress site; because somewhere, sometime, when you least expect it (and most likely when it is least convenient), you will go to perform what appears to be a minor upgrade of a plugin or theme and your site will completely vanish — poof, gone from the Internet. If you have experienced this, relax, all is not lost, you’re just experiencing the white screen of death. What is the white screen of death? First, let’s clarify what we are talking about. The most […]
WordPress Community Shares Thoughts on Microsoft’s Open Source News
On Wednesday, S. Somasegar, the corporate vice president of the developer division at Microsoft, announced that Microsoft is opening up access to .NET and Visual Studio — a move that will lead to universal access of Microsoft’s industry-leading platform and tools. In the coming months Microsoft plans to continue to open source the full server-side .NET Core Stack: ASP.NET 5 down, the Core Runtime, and Framework, Somasegar said. In addition, the open source .NET will be expanded to run on Linux and Mac OS X in addition to Windows. As of Wednesday, several components of the core .NET framework have been released and […]
