The REST API will not be included in WordPress 4.5, according to an update posted by Adam Silverstein, Senior Web Engineer at 10UP. “The REST API team’s proposal is to merge the four main endpoints when they are ready, and they are not ready for 4.5,” the post said. “As such, no endpoints are targeted for WordPress 4.5.” This news comes after last week’s conversation during which Matt Mullenweg said he was uncomfortable merging the REST API until the endpoints were complete. He was referring to the fact that the four default endpoints aren’t ready, even though they are available in the plugin. […]
Introduction to the JSON REST API Part 2
Update: For more information, you can download our free ebook, The Ultimate Guide to the WordPress REST API In last week’s article, I showed just how easy it is to use the new WordPress REST API to get posts from a remote site. In this article we’re going to build on what we learned last week and use the REST API to copy posts from one site to another. First I’ll show you how to create a post in a site with data sourced from a remote site via the REST API. Then I’ll show you how to take a post […]
Developing A REST API App – Part 2: Adding And Testing Our Data
Following on from our introductory article, it’s now time to get down to business in our REST API series and start actually building the foundations of our eventual app. We’ll kick things off by getting some core data into a local install of WordPress, and then start exploring some background concepts and the general set of options available to us. We’ll do this by testing the basic reading and writing functionality of the REST API with the help of some handy tools which make it easy for non-technical users to follow along. By the end of this session, we should […]
‘An Untechnical Guide To The WP REST API,’ A Free White Paper For Non-Developers
The WordPress REST API is a hot topic in the WordPress space, particularly among developers. But for some of us less technical WordPress users, understanding exactly why this API is so revolutionary is a challenge. WP Engine and Torque have teamed up to create a free white paper on the WordPress REST API geared toward non-developers. Just because you don’t know how to code, doesn’t mean you have to miss out on what the REST API has to offer. Download The WordPress REST API, An Untechnical Guide for Non-Developers. The paper answers questions like, what is an API, what does REST stand for, and what does […]
Adding Custom Routes to the WordPress REST API
Most of the discussion around the WordPress REST API has been about querying the default routes. In that sense, we’re treating it as a monolithic API—like the Twitter API, for example. The truth is, however, that the WordPress REST API is not one API, but millions of highly customizable APIs, which can also be leveraged as a tool for making APIs. Yes, it comes with default routes, but, by necessity, those routes are a compromise between tens of millions of sites, including many that haven’t been made yet. Just like WordPress isn’t just the global WP_Query object, the REST API isn’t just the default […]
