Last weekend in Boston it was hot and humid—a typical mid-July day in the Northeast. Despite the heat, roughly 300 attendees gathered together for WordCamp Boston at the Sherman Union Hall at Boston University to talk WordPress. The event featured talks by Scott Wyden Kivowitz, Amy CQ, John Eckman, Fred Meyer, Mel Choyce, and many more. Let’s take a look at some of the highlights from WordCamp Boston. WordPress Design Trends Core contributor and design engineer at Automattic, Mel Choyce presented on industry design trends in WordPress. “Trends aren’t inherently good or bad,” Mel pointed out, “they’re just part of a designer’s toolkit.” In Mel’s presentation she highlighted […]

Five Things You Missed At WordCamp Europe 2015
Can WordPress make you sweat? Absolutely. Just ask anyone who attended WordCamp Europe a few weeks ago in Seville. The weekend saw temperatures swell to nearly one hundred degrees (or forty degrees for our friends using Celsius). Beyond temperatures, the material at this year’s WordCamp Europe was equally “hot.” Speakers like Matt Mullenweg, Karin Christen, and Becs Rivett turned up the heat with insights that are sure to set the WordPress world ablaze over the next few months. For those who didn’t attend, here are five things you missed: Ethics and Social Responsibility Ethics and social responsibility aren’t exactly the first […]

Your Assumptions Are Wrong: A Lesson from WordCamp Denver
Three WordCamps in three weekends? Seems a bit crazy but I did it: Miami, Orange County, and this past weekend, Denver. Here’s what I learned from Denver. Break Free of Your Assumptions “Your assumptions are your windows on the world. Scrub them off every once in a while, or the light won’t come in.” – Isaac Asimov Our brains love to take complex ideas and simplify them so they are easier to understand. From what I’ve read, it is a primary driver in our species’ ability to survive. This is where our assumptions come from. Problem is, assumptions can be hard to break, and can […]
“Just Do It” Says Shia LaBeouf At WordCamp Orange County
It all started with an origami crane. I meticulously assembled it while waiting in line for lunch. This origami crane was the entry in a raffle for an iPad mini, offered by SiteGround hosting; but the prize wasn’t what I was after. I honestly didn’t even care what my crane would look like when I was finished. Instead, I enjoyed the process of making the crane. I’ll come back to this crane in a moment, but as WordCamp Orange County carried along, I saw one theme underlying the entire event. It was passion. Passion for the Community The WordPress community is full […]
6 upcoming WordCamps you just have to attend
One of the most satisfying things you can do is get involved in the WordPress community. There hasn’t been a community I’ve been a part of that is as supportive, approachable, and friendly as the WordPress community. I’ve already written about the various ways to become involved in the WordPress community—from helping on support forums, to contributing to WordPress core. One of the best ways to engage and get involved with the WordPress community (or any community for that matter) is to gather together, share ideas, and network. That is what WordCamps are all about. What is a WordCamp? Haven’t heard of WordCamps before? The official […]

WordCamp San Diego was held this weekend at the San Diego Hall of Champions in Balboa Park. Roughly 250 people attended the two-day event, despite two other WordCamps occurring at the same time—WordCamp Seattle and WordCamp Atlanta. The event attracted attendees, speakers, and sponsors from all over the world, and boasted an impressive collection of sessions and panels. Volunteers were appropriately dressed in referee jerseys to align with the WordCamp theme of “Just WordPress It.” The event kicked off bright and early Saturday morning, with doors opening at 8 a.m. Saturday featured four tracks—Beginner, Admin, Developer, and Designer—each composed of seven sessions […]
