Minimizing page load time is incredibly important for both UX and SEO. We spend tons of time obsessing over getting our code and servers optimized to serve our sites as fast as possible, but once you incorporate data from external APIs, you may be putting your site’s load times at the mercy of an external server that you have no control over. Even under the best circumstances, site performance will generally still be an issue when getting data from third-party APIs, due to the additional time required to make extra HTTP requests. For these reasons, it’s important to leverage a caching system […]
Evaluating Support Options for Plugin Developers
Offering support for WordPress plugins is a tricky business. I consider it extremely important for plugin developers to offer some level of support, but it can be hard to figure out just how much. Fortunately, there have been several conversations surrounding support. Tom McFarlin in particular, wrote a series of posts discussing support options for both free and premium plugins. I think it’s worthwhile to keep the conversation going, and take a fresh look at these. Free Support Support for your plugins requires an investment of your own time and resources, and no small one at that. But here’s the […]
WebDevStudios Acquires Maintainn
Today, website development company WebDevStudios announced the acquisition of Maintainn, a professional WordPress support and maintenance company. As WebDevStudios has grown into one of the larger WordPress companies in the space, the acquisition seems like a natural step in its lifecycle. According to the announcement, Maintainn will become the one-stop support and maintenance entity for WedDevStudios’ client retainers and incoming clients. In addition, Maintainn will continue to […]
After the Install: Version 4.0
Having had the privilege to speak at numerous WordCamps over the last few years, one of the presentations I’ve done, which has always been well received, is called “After the Install.” I retired it after about 1.5 years, but the editor here at Torque decided it would be a good time to revise it in a written format, and I readily agreed. So before you get behind the wheel of your freshly installed WordPress site, and while it still has that new install smell, here’s a list of a few things you should do. One last little thing before we […]
1 Billion Additional Customers: Optimize Your Site for China’s Online Market
China has been on the news a lot in the last years. The growth of its economy is leaving people in disbelief. It seems like not even a month goes by without some superlative-spouting news about the People’s Republic. Not just since Alibaba, the China-based e-commerce giant, landed the biggest IPO in history is the world looking toward Asia’s powerhouse and its growing industry and service sector. Yet with all the news and commotion, China’s online market is still a bit of a Pandora’s box for most internet marketers. Very few people dare to venture there for lack of available […]
Why Does WordPress Need FTP?
One aspect of WordPress rarely discussed is FTP. FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. It was developed as long ago as the 1970s as a quick way to move files between computers — particularly useful for uploading files from a personal computer to a web server’s computer. Now, back in the early days of web design, FTP was essential: developers would work on a file, upload it to their server via FTP, and visitors to their website could view it. But this wasn’t just necessary for designing the look and layout of a site: every new page added to a […]
Interview with Scott Bolinger on WordPress Mobile
There are 1.75 Billion smartphone users in the world. That’s roughly 25% of the world population, and this number will only continue its rapid growth. Over the past few years, WordPress mobile has steadily gained popularity — there’s a slew of different options for optimizing your site for mobile devices, as well as options for creating mobile apps out of your WordPress site. To gain further insight into WordPress mobile, I contacted Scott Bolinger, co-founder of AppPresser‚ a fast […]
Processing Forms with AJAX Using the JSON REST API
Update: For more information, you can download our free ebook, The Ultimate Guide to the WordPress REST API. In this article, I’m going to demonstrate how to write a simple plugin to create and edit posts using the JSON REST API. While this could be the basis of a cool, front-end editing plugin — with the addition of some fields and CSS, and the implementation of the TinyMCE or similar, of course — the point isn’t to reverse the engineering of the WordPress post editor, but rather to introduce you to processing form data using the REST API and AJAX. After you understand how […]

WordPress 4.1 Welcomes a New Class of Committers
With WordPress 4.0 released, it’s time to once again look to the future, WordPress 4.1.
