Automattic Wages War On ‘Woo’ Domain Names
“Automattic is actively asking businesses having the word ‘woo’ in their domain name to change the domain name,” WP Mayor wrote Monday in a blog post. The first known site to bow to the pressure is WooGPL, a WooCommerce plugin and extension company. WooGPL owner Billy Ablett announced in March that he will close up shop in June in an effort to “keep the peace.” Automattic contacted Ablett and claimed his use of the word “Woo” constituted trademark infringement, the announcement stated. Automattic Could Go Public In 2016, Report Says
Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com, is among 36 “unicorns” that could go public in 2016, CB Insights said in a report released yesterday. The 2016 Tech IPO Pipeline states there are more than 80 private tech companies in the U.S. currently valued at $1 billion or more, and notes that Automattic is among the 36 companies with the greatest momentum. Automattic joined the billion-dollar club in 2014 when it raised $160 million in Series C Funding, which raised its valuation to $1.16 billion. On Wednesday, Domain Name Wire broke news of another interesting cybersquatting case: Automattic successfully defended their right to use Thesis.com, despite opposition from the Thesis framework developer, Chris Pearson. Although Automattic is a separate legal entity, this case certainly draws parallels to the WordPress Foundation’s legal wrangle with TheWordPressHelpers.com.
