Although we’re moving to a more permanent location we’ve been in love with being a virtualized and distributed team for quite a while and we’ll continue to do that with our out-of-state staff. It’s tough though, that’s for sure, to stay on task at times and to make sure that everyone is in-sync with the what we’re doing so we use things like SocialCast for our community management and as well as tasks on occasion. It’s like a digital watercooler back there at times! And of course we have to deal with such oddities as figuring out where you put the […]
Prolific North's Interview with Mike Little
Matt Mullenweg gets named as one of the 30 Under 30 in the last Forbes and yet he was, originally, only half of the picture when WordPress was just a concept and idea. Mike Little, on the other hand, has not gotten nearly the same amount of press. According to his own bio he now maintains around 40 or so WordPress sites and continues to do development in a small boutique firm, Zed1: In 2003 he helped Matt Mullenweg start a little project which became known as WordPress. They initially worked together with an ever-growing band of volunteer developers to build and […]

The Difference: WordPress Foundation and Automattic, Inc.
There’s been a lot of confusion surrounding Automattic Inc., the WordPress Foundation, WordPress.org/WordPress.com and everything else in between. So much so that most people unfortunately use all of it interchangeably which is the wrong thing to do. I want to clearly state that there are distinct differences between all of them and that it’s worth knowing what you’re talking about when you start jumping into the muddy waters that is licensing, the GPL, ownership, and developing a WordPress-centric business. At the center of all of this is really the WordPress Foundation so by establishing this we can clearly take a look […]
Envato Licensing, the Community and the Foundation
On the weekend I got some time to tune into the WPCandy podcast with host Ryan Imel and guest Jake Caputo. They discussed the recent blackball post and jokingly refer to Jake, who is an Envato Elite author, as surely having access to a magic red button that he can press to “make things happen”. I wish we did have this feature! Elite authors like Jake, after all, are the lifeblood of ThemeForest. It’s been an interesting week with those posts, all the many comments, as well as lively discussion threads on ThemeForest itself. And it’s been a timely one […]
So… Who Calls the Shots on WordPress?
You do. Or, all of us do because WordPress is not owned outright by anyone specifically. Design is Philosophy shares their perspective on this interesting tension between ownership, copyright, and development:
Automattic Acquires Simperium, Maker of Simplenote
It hasn’t even been a full month yet in 2013 and already the acquisitions are rolling in (although we knew about some unknown purchase late last year). It appears that question has now been answered with Automattic acquiring the makers of Simplenote via their parent company Simperium. A company focused on synchronization and syncing technology, the play could be wide-ranging as the core technology could be used for some of the many Automattic companies. But who knows. Typically questions arise about whether this is a talent acquisition instead of a technology one and apparently, via Matt Mullenweg, they are going […]
A Chat with Vid Luther, Founder of ZippyKid
Some may argue that 2013 is the year of the responsive WordPress design and I can see it from both sides but I can’t imagine that anyone would disagree that this is definitely the year of managed hosting for WordPress. The trend is nothing but up-and-to-the-right as more and more theme shops, individuals, and entrepreneurs are considering adding a hosted layer to their core offering and services. We’re keeping track of all of it here at WP Daily! We’re also trying to reach out to some of the key players and get their perspective on how they’ve seen the market […]
A Response: ThemeForest Authors and WordCamps
I was really disappointed to hear recently that one of our ThemeForest authors, Jake Caputo aka Designcrumbs, had been barred from supporting, speaking at, and volunteering at WordCamps. It’s been a couple of years since Envato itself was restricted from supporting these events. As a company I feel there are plenty of other ways we can still support the WordPress ecosystem beyond the official Camps – e.g. meetups, teaching, and so on. But in the intervening time, I was happy that our authors continued attending and speaking at WordCamps – which was great. Many, like Jake, are amongst the most […]
A House Divided: WordPress.org, Envato, and GPL Battle
There has been little secret about the issues between WordPress.org proper and Envato and the various and different interpretations to GPL, licensing, and distribution/ownership rights. But the battle is beginning to get heated (and personal) as the WordPress Foundation is now requesting that anyone who sells their products on Envato properties (WordPress Themes and Plugins) not speak at, volunteer for, organize or sponsor WordCamps (Thanks Drew for the clarification!). And when I say it’s getting heated – it’s really getting heated – there hasn’t been this type of online riot since, well, Chris Pearson (remember that big issue?). It’s worth noting that it […]
