Although WordCamp US was full of hope for the future of the platform, it wasn’t without conflict. The night before the conference began, Pantheon’s $100,000 sponsorship was pulled leaving the company without a booth. The decision was made after attendees were greeted by Pantheon logos in the official WordPress US hotel, the Downtown Sheraton. Both the concierge desk and elevators were covered with Pantheon marketing materials. This kind of marketing isn’t unusual in the world of commercial conferences. Sponsors of E3 and Dreamforce put up billboards and ads on buses. However, WordPress and WordCamps are inherently different and the community operates […]
WordPress 4.7 “Vaughan” Has Finally Arrived
As promised in the State of the Word, WordPress 4.7 dropped yesterday. The update, named after American Jazz Singer Sarah “Sassy” Vaughan, features a new default theme, the REST API content endpoints, and more. TwentySeventeen The newest default theme is designed specifically for businesses. The idea is for anyone with a business to be able to plug content in and go. It is easy to make this theme look good without much knowledge of code or design. REST API Content Endpoints The fate of the REST API has been in question since it was rejected from a merge in 4.5 and then […]
Highlights From the 2016 Annual State Of The Word
After two full days of talks, parties, and networking, WordCampers lined up to fill the massive room at the top of the conference center. It was Matt Mullenweg’s 10th annual State of the Word address, in which we learn about the last year in WordPress and what’s to come. Mullenweg began by thanking the city of Philadelphia, sponsors, the 200 volunteers, and organizers saying, “this has been the smoothest WordCamp ever.” WordPress Meetups This year was huge for WordPress events. There were 115 total WordCamps in 41 countries, with 36,000 tickets sold. 750 organizer worked on those camps and 2,056 […]
WordPress In Public Schools
WordPress is incredibly versatile. It is inexpensive, easy to learn, and safe. That makes it the perfect option for organizations that have a lot of time or money to dedicate to building and maintaining a site like nonprofits or schools. Back in July, we looked at how WordPress powers the Newark, New Jersey Public School District. That post centered around an interview with WebDevStudios and gave an excellent picture of just how much switching to WordPress changed the way the school district used the web. This weekend at WordCamp US in Philly, Cameron Barrett dug into the process of migrating and managing […]
WordCamp US Attendee Guide: 2016 Edition
The second annual WordCamp kicks off this Friday at the Convention Center in the heart Philadelphia. The two-day event is jam-packed with incredible speakers, sessions, and swag. Since the Torque team went last year, we thought would pass along some advice to anyone going this year. General WordCamp Advice First, let’s dive in to some general advice that applies to any event. Bring a water bottle: You will be walking a lot and might not be able to get to a drinking fountain. Wear comfortable shoes: There is a lot of standing and walking, so wearing comfortable shoes will make all the difference. Introduce yourself […]
3 Reasons To Be Thankful For The WordPress Community
It’s the day after Thanksgiving, the leftovers are put away, the dishes are cleaned, and we at Torque have been doing some reminiscing. Maybe it’s the haze of turkey we’re still in, but we really appreciate the WordPress community and would like to say a few words. WordCamps We love WordCamps and all WordPress meetups. Not only do they award the opportunity to discuss and learn, you also get to meet amazing people. Sometimes it’s people you’ve been talking to online for years and sometimes it’s people you’ve never met before. Whoever you come into contact with, WordCamps are a great way […]

Back in May, Automattic announced it had acquired the rights to .blog and anyone could get one for $30 a year with premium names being offered at a higher price. See if the domain you want is available here. We recently got in touch with Patrick Jones from .blog Communications to learn more about this exciting advancement. Why .blog? WordPress started as a blogging platform and was created with that in mind. Though the platform has grown significantly in the last 13 years and […]

How WordCamp Denver Connected The Community
Last weekend, WordPressers met at the SpringHill Suites Denver Downtown Auraria Campus Hotel & Hospitality Learning Center in the Mile High City for WordCamp Denver. It was two days chock full of networking, speakers, and cider. The organizers did a great job of adding new elements to the “typical” WordCamp format. There was a lot of audience/speaker interaction, and even more time than usual for networking. Town Hall Sessions Alongside sessions, WordCamp Denver also featured five Town Hall sessions. The casual format allowed attendees to comfortably ask questions to experts. Each session was centered around a specific topic and featured subject-matter […]
