Last week, it was announced that Modern Tribe will sponsor WPCampus. “Modern Tribe has been an active supporter of the WPCampus community and we are proud to have them as one of our Vice-President sponsors for this year’s conference,” the announcement said. But that isn’t the beginning of the company’s involvement in higher education. CEO of Modern Tribe, Shane Pearlman talked to Torque about higher education and WordPress. “Any time we have the opportunity to engage with bright people solving similar problems to the ones we consistently run into, it catches our attention,” Pearlman said. “Out of that community a number […]
Automattic Wages War On ‘Woo’ Domain Names
“Automattic is actively asking businesses having the word ‘woo’ in their domain name to change the domain name,” WP Mayor wrote Monday in a blog post. The first known site to bow to the pressure is WooGPL, a WooCommerce plugin and extension company. WooGPL owner Billy Ablett announced in March that he will close up shop in June in an effort to “keep the peace.” Automattic contacted Ablett and claimed his use of the word “Woo” constituted trademark infringement, the announcement stated. WooGPL’s announcement points out that the company has been operating for two years and Automattic’s trademark on Woo began in October 2015, roughly five months after Automattic acquired […]

Update Your Software; It’s Easy

Torque has written many times about the importance of updates, not only for making sure your site runs the way it should but mostly to ensure everything is as secure as possible. Checking for and downloading updates should be part of your weekly WordPress routine. Adding something new WordPress itself, a theme, or a plugin could introduce vulnerabilities. Some of the most notable examples of this are The New York Times, Wired, and of course WordPress.com’s Calypso. But there are even more companies putting the API into action. The REST API has clearly been put into action successfully, so perhaps it is ready to be merged with […]

WebDevStudios recently released Pluginize, a new plugin marketplace that houses plugins geared toward people who want to create professional-looking websites without learning how to code. “The bulk of our plugins are targeted at what I would call ‘Site Builders,’” said Director of Products, John Hawkins. “People who want to customize sites to do what they need for clients, but may not have the skill or desire to build everything from scratch.” Created by WebDevStudios and AppPresser, the company aims to give non-developers a chance to easily create professional looking websites.
