You probably already see the notice in your dashboard that you have something *ahem* to do this weekend for yourself and perhaps all your clients, customers, and personal projects: v3.5.1 has been released! 37 bugs have been destroyed on this latest maintenance and security release and as mentioned via the WordPress blog it includes such things as: Editor: Prevent certain HTML elements from being unexpectedly removed or modified in rare cases. Media: Fix a collection of minor workflow and compatibility issues in the new media manager. Networks: Suggest proper rewrite rules when creating a new network. Prevent scheduled posts from […]
Creative Execution: Quartz
Occasionally we like to showcase a few examples of creative WordPress implementations and this one was submitted by Grayson Pope who found the site while browsing: I was looking at this fairly new site from the people behind the Atlantic called Quartz. Here’s the link: http://qz.com/ It’s a really slick, mobile first strategy that scales up and down really nicely. It’s built on wordpress apparently, which I didn’t know. Just logged onto it and saw the black WP bar at the top. Pretty cool site. I’d love to hear more about how they built it if you know anything. We […]
Automattic Acquires Simperium, Maker of Simplenote
It hasn’t even been a full month yet in 2013 and already the acquisitions are rolling in (although we knew about some unknown purchase late last year). It appears that question has now been answered with Automattic acquiring the makers of Simplenote via their parent company Simperium. A company focused on synchronization and syncing technology, the play could be wide-ranging as the core technology could be used for some of the many Automattic companies. But who knows. Typically questions arise about whether this is a talent acquisition instead of a technology one and apparently, via Matt Mullenweg, they are going […]
Create Better Code with GenerateWP
Everyone’s looking for a shortcut, especially if you’re a developer who has more code to write than time (which is nearly always the case, right?). And if you’re a developer then you already have your own personal “bag of tricks” that help you optimize and streamline your workflow so that you can minimize waste, distraction, and increase the speed of production – we can take all the help we can get! That’s where GenerateWP might come in, which is a new product by Rami Yushuvaev, an entrepreneur, developer, and blogger. The concept is simple as it provides tools for developers […]
Pressnomics Track at Every WordCamp?
The business of WordPress is growing. If you’ve been around these open waters for any amount of time you know very well that creating a sustainable and profitable business is a very real possibility with WordPress – anything from WordPress consulting through design and development to optimization of existing sites and professional services, to copywriting, copyediting, content creation, plugin/theme shops, and more. As a result more and more of us are concerned and interested in learning how to make WordPress as business work, learning the strategies of running a successful company without all the pain and trial of our own idiotic […]
Behind the Scenes: Podcasts, Meetings, and Napping
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oa7EIKN3mbw&feature=youtu.be We’re running a bit behind on our build-out of our new downtown office space for our Editorial Offices but that’s ok – it’ll be all worth the wait when it comes together. The last major piece of our construction efforts is one large sound-proof room that’s going to house not only our creative meetings but also be the space for our Hello Dolly Podcast and even a place for me to nap during the day. No joke.
Accessibility: WordPress Plugin Causes Seizure
Wow, I couldn’t believe it when I read it: Recently a friend of mine visited a blog she often visits. What she didn’t know was that the blogger had added a fun, temporary new feature to her blog. When my friend visited the blog, it triggered a seizure. The seizure trigger in my friend’s case was WordPress’s “Let It Snow” feature, which is a plug-in option that will cause little white dots to float continuously down the screen soon after someone opens the blog. Ugh. We had this plugin active for a few weeks around the holiday season late last year […]
Brian Casel Reflects on Bootstrapping Restaurant Engine
Running a business is a challenge – just ask anyone who’s tried it. Starting one is even more difficult, especially if it’s just yourself, your idea, and a grand vision to make it the best that it can possibly be – if you can survive the first year then you’ve accomplished more than most! That’s what Brian Casel has experienced (and more) in the last since since launching Restaurant Engine, a niche-based product to help restaurant owners get their own food-based business off the ground. His reflection is revealing because it’s not about just the good that he’s experienced and […]
Haz Time? Join Events Team!
Andrea Middleton, someone I’ve been in contact with for a bit since I’m helping to organize the local WordCamp Atlanta here in a few months, is looking for a few good men (and women) to join the events team. And you should join. Seriously. She’s looking for help in these three areas: Event Planning Training Materials: If you have great writing and editorial skills, plus expertise in organizing WordCamps and other WP events, you’d be a real asset to this group. WordPress.tv Event Video Management: This team needs a few more intrepid WordCamp video reviewers. WordCamp Base Theme Page Templates: This […]
