I was passing a few conversations back and forth with my team in the past week about the growth of WordPress in light of the challenges of security and the ever-increasing target painted on the back of our collective ecosystem and it hit me that the WordPress security industry might just be one of the best points of entry if you’re looking to build a business in a growing niche market. Makes sense, right? With the recent global scare related to the super botnet that we’ve all talked about (and tons of blog posts) there is no surprise that I’m seeing more […]
Why We Created Sur.ly and Why it Matters
Before I start explaining the reasons why we developed Sur.ly, let me briefly tell you how this spam prevention tool works. It’s a new free WP plugin that can make your website or forum non-sensitive to spam attacks by replacing all unwarranted outbound links with safe links to interstitial pages on Sur.ly (hereafter I will clarify why this method to stop spam does matter).
Reminder: URLs are Important UI Elements
URLs – they are so vitally important and are so much a part of our lives that sometimes we do not even actively think about it anymore. I was reminded how important in a recent post entitled “URL’s Are For People, Not Computers“. With a title like that I’m fairly confident that you know what the article is about, but I thought I’d share my thoughts on that article here nonetheless. Andreas’ main point in the article is that: URLs are user facing and should be considered important UI elements He even backs this statement up with science! (PDF) I’ve […]
Daily Theme & Plugin Roundup – 4.17.2013
Happy #humpday everyone! I Hope the rest of your week is as awesome as the first part of your week. Hopefully some new plugins will help with the level of awesomeness. Check out the new plugins after the jump!
Leveling Up Your Authorship Skills with Google Plus
Otto has a great post over on make.wordpress explaining how to associate your WordPress plugins with yourself as the author in Google search results. I just tried it, easy, and it worked. While Google+ may not be the hot social area on the block, it does seem to have some benefits. Studies show that listings with a specified author receive much more clicks and attention than those that do not. Who doesn’t want more attention to their hand-crafted WordPress plugins? More traffic? More readers? More leads? More collaborators…?
WPpreset, Another Way To Systemize Your Installs
I’m back with yet another review for you guys. This time we’re taking a look at WPpreset, which was submitted to us just a few days ago. We’ve covered other systematic installation options before so don’t be surprised when we start comparing WPpreset to another option that got both a positive review and feedback about a month ago, WProller. WPpreset prides itself on the time it can save you on your multiple installs and setups of WordPress. In fact their demo video shows you how to set up a WordPress install with all of your preferred plugins and such in […]
Daily Theme & Plugin Roundup – 4.16.2013
There’s so many things to share with you on today’s roundup. We are 2 for 2. We have both new and updated themes and plugins. Make sure to take a look at them after the jump!
Better Tools Make Better WordPress Developers
The 13th century French proverb “mauvés ovriers ne trovera ja bon hostill” roughly translates to “a bad workman will never find a good tool.” I’m sure at the time this proverb applied to stone masons and carpenters. Few would have imagined that it would also apply to web developers pushing bits around on a screen centuries later. It’s unlikely that you are “a bad workman.” You are reading this article afterall. You’re probably looking for a new tool to help you with WordPress development. High performing web developers don’t do that. In his reveting WordCamp San Diego 2013 talk, the […]
Gumby 2: Complete Front-End Framework
For those that spend an incredible amount of time working on the front-end of design we all have our unique toolkits that simplify and streamline our workflows. This may include a CSS framework (or two) that speed things up so that we can continue to churn out great work in a reasonable amount of time. Although I’ve been a long-time fan of Bootstrap but I’m not dogmatic meaning I am willing to try something new to see if it gives me a similar or better (hopefully) experience with front-end CSS development. So when I happened upon this new-ish framework that made […]
Free Responsive Wireframe [PSD File]
The web is a wonderfully-mysterious thing, full of strangeness and entertainment and actual resources at times. It’s the latter that is the most impressive as it’s chock-full of people willing to give their time and energy to others via their own work. That’s why I like covering the “freebies” the most as it plays nicely with our open source philosophy around WordPress, you know what I mean? So when I saw Chris Bannister’s free responsive wireframe photoshop file I knew that I needed to make sure that our community had an opportunity to get a copy for their own use […]
