Last month, Cole Henley wrote a brief thought on The Pastry Box Project. I know we’ve only just met but in 2013 I want you to promise me something. Write more, help others more, be confident that you know more than you think because I guarantee there will be people who can learn from your experiences and knowledge. I bet you know more than you think. That simple thought really resonated with me. In particular, I found the same phrase bouncing around in my head. Write more, help others more. As members of the WordPress community, this is our mantra. […]
Yahoo! Employees: Go Work at Automattic
Matt Mullenweg didn’t hold back his opinion when commenting on Yahoo’s apparent decision to ban work-from-home opportunities and working remote: For anyone who enjoys working from wherever they like in the world, and is interested in WordPress, Automattic is 100% committed to being distributed. 130 of our 150 people are outside of San Francisco – http://automattic.com/work-with-us/ Coming from Marissa Mayer herself, apparently the change is coming in June and will be an opportunity to “get with the program” or quit:
Automattic Sites Re-Imagined via Stéphane Thomas
It seems to be a growing trend for creative individuals to undertake the work of re-imagining, redesigning, re-branding larger companies websites and properties either for a personal project, a portfolio piece, or even as an attempt to get hired. It’s not that this is a bad thing – I actually love seeing the creative alternatives to long-standing brands. Take for example a recent Kodak redesign or even the very famous Microsoft re-brand that eventually led to a job offer for the designer, Andrew Kim. Powerful stuff this is!
Yahoo!, Powered by WordPress, Kind Of.
It’s interesting to even consider the possibility and even hear that title sift through your brain for a bit, but it’s true, at least in a small way – Marissa Mayer, the CEO announced a new “modern look” to their homepage that has gone live, which is a great move for them: Designed to be more intuitive and personal, the new Yahoo! experience is all about your interests and preferences. Since streams of information have become the paradigm of choice on the web, we’re introducing a newsfeed with infinite scroll, letting you experience a virtually endless feed of news articles. Whether you […]
10 Reasons Why Automattic is a Model Startup
It’s no secret that we’re super-fans of Automattic, Inc. and WordPress. We kind of bleed this stuff, you know? And we’re not alone in that as many of you are fanatics as well! But we try our very best to be critical of what we report on and unbiased in our approach – it’s a line we toe every single day but the tension, as they say, is a good one. One of the things that I do besides edit this blog and write like it’s going out of style is help my team grow as a startup and organization […]
How Automattic Makes Their Automagic
Although we’re moving to a more permanent location we’ve been in love with being a virtualized and distributed team for quite a while and we’ll continue to do that with our out-of-state staff. It’s tough though, that’s for sure, to stay on task at times and to make sure that everyone is in-sync with the what we’re doing so we use things like SocialCast for our community management and as well as tasks on occasion. It’s like a digital watercooler back there at times! And of course we have to deal with such oddities as figuring out where you put the […]
January 2013 Forbes Magazine, 30 Under 30
In mid-December of last year we mentioned how Matt Mullenweg was nominated as one of the elite 30 Under 30 for Forbes – what an honor it must be to be among those other 29 incredible (and young!) individuals. But I’ve been so backed up with work that I finally got around to sifting through the January issue where it was highlighted in print and was able to snap a picture of in the real:
The Difference: WordPress Foundation and Automattic, Inc.
There’s been a lot of confusion surrounding Automattic Inc., the WordPress Foundation, WordPress.org/WordPress.com and everything else in between. So much so that most people unfortunately use all of it interchangeably which is the wrong thing to do. I want to clearly state that there are distinct differences between all of them and that it’s worth knowing what you’re talking about when you start jumping into the muddy waters that is licensing, the GPL, ownership, and developing a WordPress-centric business. At the center of all of this is really the WordPress Foundation so by establishing this we can clearly take a look […]
The GPL WordPress Issue Isn't New Folks
We’ve gotten a lot of tweets and emails via our contact form in the last week about the overarching GPL debate created recently that has clearly shown that for many this appears to be an entirely new issue which many of us know to be not true. For context and for helping out a lot of people with similar questions I just wanted to clearly state what I’ve been answering a number of people who have asked essentially: “What the heck is going on?!?” @wpdailyco Hey Guys, can you helps us newbies who use Envato to purchase themes understand what the heck is […]
So… Who Calls the Shots on WordPress?
You do. Or, all of us do because WordPress is not owned outright by anyone specifically. Design is Philosophy shares their perspective on this interesting tension between ownership, copyright, and development:
