Many people find themselves in an unfortunately position of being on a lesser blogging platform. I remember switching to blogger with the dreams of utilizing the free adsense spots, being able to completely customise the design and having my own domain for a mere £7 a year. What a bargain. Then a year or so in I realised I had made a mistake. Although blogger was a great platform it was just a blog, I couldn’t do some of the amazing things I saw happening on WordPress blogs and envy grew in my heart. Eventually, I made the jump to a self-hosted […]
Behind the Scenes: "HEART Contributors"
Every week I share a few thoughts via a simple email newsletter to our WP Daily Contributors and I share with them a little more detail as to what we’re doing behind the scenes as well as to encourage them in their own publishing efforts. They are a great group and I’m so thankful to already have a growing and robust contributor group! They are the source of energy and power behind a lot of what we do here and we need to thank them even more for their work! As a result, we’re starting to create a “HEART Contributors” program […]
WooThemes Outsources, Partners for Custom Work
WooThemes has announced that they are now partnering with Codeables as a strategic outsourcing team to help do much of the custom design and development work that is often thrown at the WooThemes team directly. This makes an incredible amount of sense and is something that most, if not all, premium theme companies (and free distributors of themes and plugins) face: The onslaught of requests for custom work. Knowing this from first-hand experience I believe that what WooThemes has done is both strategic and wise in terms of their own resources focusing their time on their core products instead of […]
Learning on the Fly: The Life of Intern #0
Week #1 as an intern is in the books and I’ve come out the other side unscathed, for the most part. I say for the most part because I’m still the new guy; mocking and correction are abundant. Don’t believe me? Check out the latest episode of Hello Dolly for proof. I’ve also come out of the first week with an even greater desire to improve: as a writer, editor, blogger and all around WordPress genius (long way to go on this last one). I’m learning quickly how much I don’t know, which has done nothing but prove to me […]
Behind the Scenes: Doodle Space
As we continue to build out our new office space we’re trying to find places where we can insert opportunities for creativity. Jared, our designer, came up with a full floor-to-ceiling chalkboard paint idea that we finished out recently. And this morning we spent a least a few minutes putting our own “marks” on the wall – and we’d love for you to doodle something creative when you stop by (perhaps at WordCamp Atlanta 2013?)! Check out some of our initial doodles:
Medium: Content Collaboration via Notes
Medium is one of Ev Williams newest ventures – you know, that guy behind Blogger and Twitter, among other things, and it’s an online publishing system that’s already presenting some very innovative perspectives and implementations for both the end user/reader as well as the publisher. Why do something like this? Williams’ shares a few thoughts about the genesis: The ethos behind Medium is one of openness and democracy—like the Internet itself. Eventually we’ll be opening so anyone can post and create collections. But that’s not all… The beauty of the Internet is it allows anyone to put their thoughts out […]
Primer on Blog Stats: Jetpack, Google Analytics
In my recent post I suggested that perhaps checking your stats every ten seconds wasn’t a good thing. Okay I actually told you lot to get back to work but it’s a small difference, right? After I shared the post across various social networks I had some comments from people about some of the tips I suggested to get the most from your stats. Although everyone and their lolcat knows how to see total page views not everyone knows how to get down into the real nitty gritty of stats and the really useful information that they contain. I want to […]
Impressed: My First Look at Tackk
Tackk is one of those web applications that when I first heard about it and tried it out I was nearly offended about how easy it was to start creating content. In fact, there was no buffer between me and my first engagement and the publication layer at all – you instantly get hit with a demo area and are asked to start playing around. But I realized that this was a brilliant way of getting new users to understand explicitly how the software works and how it can help them start building a simple page of interactive content. What the […]
[Insert City] Local Meetups Growing This Year
There’s a lot of talk and movement this year around local meetups (as well as WordCamps) and I’ve been finding more and more great examples of local communities that are going all-out for their people and providing them as much value and resources as possible. For example, I stumbled upon one of New York City’s local communities @ WPNYC and it was neat to see what they’ve implemented for their community. For instance, they have created an entire BuddyPress community site for their members which is active daily:
WooCommerce to Go Hosted Platform?
This morning many people were greeted with an interesting question posed by Adii of WooThemes: We’re toying with the idea of building a hosted version of WooCommerce, which has all the benefits of a downloadable product (flexible, customizable templating) along with the benefits of a 1-click setup experience. So we’d essentially take care of all the work & you’d just start with the customization and implementation of your project’s goals. Instead of once-off costs (which is the case with WooCommerce themes & extensions now), we’ll have different monthly pricing plans which will include access to various themes & extensions. Direct […]
