I got another update last night as I went to review some comments on my iPhone and it appeared that the WordPress for iOS has hit the 3.4 mile marker with some big updates! Namely, you now can get notifications directly on your device about that stuff that matters the most, like new comments, moderation, stats, followers, and even “likes”. You can, of course, turn these off in your settings. This is for both WordPress.com and self-hosted WordPress.org sites. I’m going to test this out myself and see if it get incredibly annoying – I typically have most notifications turned off […]
WordCamps in 2012: 15 New Camps, 4,000 More Attendees
We’ve seen Year in Reviews (YIR) from Automattic, WordPress.com (and also here), and WordPress.org and those have been great to review to see how far we’ve come as a community. Andrea Middleton has now added to that those YIRs by posting an overview of what WordCamp looked like in 2012 and provided some very neat stats which I’ve consolidated to see how much WordCamps have grown year-over-year:
DradCast Launches Site, First Episode Feb 13!
As we first reported here as BrAngelina and then saw a scoop here DradCast has launched as they said they would and have shared that their first episode is coming in no less than 8 days. You’ve got some new options here as well as you can sign up to be one of the hosts or even submit content. Their Host submission form reminds me of VaultPress old BETA signup form:
Behind the Scenes: Flying Monkey
Yes, that is a monkey and yes he is wearing a mask and a cape. He is one of the newest editions to our growing office space and is something that I will personally enjoy chucking at my partners. Today is yet another day where I will spend most of it cleaning up and building random things here and there while the rest of my team does work remotely. You see, there are going to be quite a few times right now where I’ll be the only one here as we’re finalizing schedules and making changes in our separate lives […]
Android See a New ManageWP App
Hey, as they say: If it ain’t broke then don’t fix it! And that’s what ManageWP has decided to do with their Android port of their iOS app that launched a few months back. You’ll find a near 1-to-1 experience if you’ve taken a look at the iPhone version of their service. What’s neat is that they have a very clear goal in mind for their mobile product development department:
Understanding MySQL
Scotty T has an great overview of how MySQL interacts with WordPress and is worth a review, especially if you’re entering into the WordPress airspace for the first time. He really sums up the tension that exists between PHP developers and MySQL here: You would be surprised how many people I have interviewed for a job that think their PHP chops are great, but their MySQL, not so much. Many great WordPress developers I know have said the same thing. Not cool. Bad SQL can bring down your site! Forget crazy scaling challenges, basic WP Query usage can bring your site down […]
Your May Be Exposing Your Database Password!
Yikes: Nearly 1% of websites built with a content management system (like WordPress or Joomla) are unknowingly exposing their database password to anyone who knows where to look. As reported by Feross Aboukhadijeh, he created a quick application affectionately called “CMSploit” that scanned the top 200,000 websites as ranked by Qauntcast and found that .011% are completely vulnerable. One step further, when he eliminated non-CMS sites he discovered that .77% showed publicly-visible config files to the websites database. Remember, this is just the top 100k sites – which means that not only are you possibly susceptible to this vulnerability but hundreds if not […]
January 2013 Forbes Magazine, 30 Under 30
In mid-December of last year we mentioned how Matt Mullenweg was nominated as one of the elite 30 Under 30 for Forbes – what an honor it must be to be among those other 29 incredible (and young!) individuals. But I’ve been so backed up with work that I finally got around to sifting through the January issue where it was highlighted in print and was able to snap a picture of in the real:
A Glimpse Into the Future of Post Revisions for 3.6
The Post Revisions function in WordPress is critically important for those that are doing some serious publishing with WordPress or even managing a team for WordPress as CMS in the context of business. And many of us have had that “close” call where we had to revert back to a previous version of some content and was so thankful that the post revision feature actually existed, right? Well, it’s getting even better in 3.6 and there have been more than a few mockups floating around for the upcoming update to the feature. Here they are for your viewing pleasure – […]
The Theme Foundry: Model for Customer Engagement
Over the weekend we saw a little rant appear in the sub-Reddit reacting to one of Theme Foundry’s theme, Portfolio. Remember, it’s a rant, so, take it with a grain of salt, but here it is via zapt0:
