I love TED Talks as they expand my mind, stir up excitement, and provide incredible insight into what’s happening in our ever-changing world. I listened to a talk this morning via Ken Robinson and his thoughts on education, which were brilliant, but his thoughts in the closing part of his argument got me thinking passionately about the WordPress culture and overall ecosystem, especially in regards to the “controlling” forces that are in play. Here’s what Ken had to say:
Sorry, My Code Won't Last Forever
Yup. I saved up for my chair. I don’t remember when I first saw a mission styled chair like this one, but the moment I saw it, I knew I wanted it. It looked sturdy (and indeed it’s the only chair in the house that’s held up for more than ten years). But this wasn’t a cheap chair – the ottoman (where you rest your feet) was something like $500. I remember thinking, that’s what I’d normally spend on a chair! So I saved. And I saved. And eventually I got my chair. And I’ve loved it ever since.

The WordPress Weekend Roundup
Tomorrow is Mother’s Day which means that every married man with kids (well, not all of them…) is fretting about doing something legit tomorrow. I’ll probably be at my local Target early tomorrow trying to find some crappy Mother’s Day card that means little more than the ridiculous $4.99 that I will pay for it. Hm… I can do better (and so can you)! Ok, but before that, enjoy our weekly roundup. 🙂

My Experience with Stringer in the Wild
John covered Stringer on the site a few days ago. To recap, it’s a new open-source RSS reader that’s self-hosted so you can take control of your reader and set things up just the way you like them. I just so happen to have Stringer up and running on my own Heroku app and have been using it for a few days, here are my thoughts.
2 Things I Learned Moving from WP.com to WP.org
When I started blogging earlier this year, I wasn’t ready to make an investment on a paid hosting provider so I started a free WordPress.com blog. Free is better right? Not necessarily. With WordPress.com I sacrificed the amazing plugins and themes from the thousands of developers out there and control over advertisements and the lack of support for JavaScript/HTML embeds, except from “secure” sources such as Twitter, YouTube, Vimeo, SoundCloud, and a few others. I also can’t host a video or audio file on WordPress.com without spending $50+ for the VideoPress and more storage “upgrades”. After gathering 36 WordPress.com followers, […]
What Matters Most: Numbers or Influence?
It has become quite apparently lately to me which is truly a winner in this battle and all of us already know this, but I want to share with you my personal testimony as to why it is and always will be true. Influence is most definitely what matters most. There seems to be this premature obsession with gaining popularity or numbers to reach what you “think” are your goals, but with time I like to believe that all of us realize what a true and admirable goal can really be. Let me first tell you my story of victory of influence […]
BlogAvenger: Expensive with Unknown Results
Today’s plugin review is for BlogAvenger, a plugin that is supposed to let you copyright everything on your blog. It’s built to ward off the “hordes of despicable content thieves that come scurrying across the web intent on only one thing: stealing our content!” If you say so. BlogAvenger wards off these hordes by disabling text selection, watermarking local images, creating DMCA notices, and banning known scrapers. Seems like a pretty powerful little plugin. Let’s take a closer look, shall we.
