A lot has changed since I first jumped on to the web; I can still remember watching the Netscape browser icon rotate and shine at me as I waited eagerly for some random .gif to load (perhaps it was the dancing banana or some flaming horizontal rule gif on a website). I remember the rise of the Web 2.0 movement and how every corporate enterprise was high as fudge on “getting in” with it, without really knowing what they were really doing. I remember working during those years of Technorati and Flickr dominance and thinking meta data, meta data, meta data (all […]
BuddyPress 1.7, Achievement 3.2 Released!
1.7 is now out and it’s called “Totonno” and apparently it’s the best version ever. They’ve been hinting at it for quite some time (although it’s not like it’s a secret or anything) but with your WordPress theme compatibility now active you won’t have to dig or search for a BuddyPress theme anymore. This is a significant boon for site owners as the paring down of things to check-off in terms of compatibility is a huge win. Better group management and administration also received a big boost with better and more powerful ways for members to connect. You can bulk-delete groups, […]

Awesome Idea for a Website? Think Again…
Or at least look at the following infographic. This decision-making tree, although a little funny and naturally silly provides an interesting perspective into the psychology of that “next great website or app” – if it wasn’t funny then it wouldn’t be somewhat true, right? One of the most common things that happens when I go publicly speak about entrepreneurship or startups is I get a lot of 1-on-1 feedback from people who “have a great idea” but who don’t have the necessary skills to pull it off. A question that I generally ask them in the front-end of this dialogue […]
A Personal Take on Responsive Design
Unless you’ve been living under a rock lately you’ve heard of responsive design, it’s the new ‘thing’ amongst web design. But in case you are unaware of what it is I’ll give you a brief explanation: Responsive design is a technique used to scale websites to pre-determined layouts based upon the device used to view the site. So if you look at a responsive website from a laptop and then from a smartphone you’ll notice that they layout changes to accommodate the difference in screen size. Makes sense right? It’s annoying to have to zoom in and out of non-responsive […]

Using EditFlow as a Repository for Posts
The whole idea of rough drafts is kind of foreign to me. I remember them being required when I was a kid but I can’t say the last time I actually wrote one. It always seemed inefficient and slow to write a rough draft, then revise it, then revise it again and then finally complete the final draft. I always thought it made more sense to edit as you write, that way you only have to write one draft. Maybe it’s because I had to write so many papers in college and grad school or maybe it’s because I don’t […]
