In the words of our technical editor, worst day of the year to be on the Internet. — Tom McFarlin (@tommcfarlin) April 1, 2013 It’s true – April Fools’ day was once a pretty cool thing with clever pranks and bogus PR releases that tricked thousands. Now it’s turned into just another marketing tactic to get a few more eyeballs on a company, product, or service. It’s overplayed, overdone, and the “genius” of it all is all but completely gone. I’m sure I will, at some point, walk through a recap or roundup of the “Best April Fool’s Jokes of […]

Full Frame and Ryu, Two New Photo Themes For WP.com
Full Frame is, not surprisingly, a full-width theme for showcasing your beautiful content from edge to edge on whatever device you are using. That’s right, Full Frame is responsive! And is it ever gorgeous!? Take a look:

It’s Friday! Let the freakin’ weekend begin! I’m definitely excited to relax a bit after a long, long week. I am all traveled out and it was my last day at my previous employer today. Some new things happening in a few weeks. More details to come. There’s a few new plugins that I can share with you on today’s roundup. Fight the [/Madness] – A Shortcode Revolution!
As a general rule, I hate WordPress shortcodes. I understand their value to the end-user and have even enjoyed developing them on some recent projects; however, they’ve become a sort of mutated flu vaccine. Created for good, they have now become a disgusting virus mimicking basic HTML and infiltrating areas they do not belong – themes. I cringe every time I see a theme that boasts “100’s of shortcodes” or, God forbid, uses

as a replacement for traditional HTML headings. But how do we make everyone happy? How do we satisfy the developers that need their themes to be competitive in marketplaces? How do […]
WPCOM Adds eCommerce Features via ShopLocket
Now this is a neat addition – ShopLocket, a simple way to sell “anything” from a website, is now partnered with WordPress.com enabling blog and site owners to sell, well, “anything” from their own sites. To enable this brave new world of blog-based e-commerce, ShopLocket has introduced a WordPress plugin that will enable users of the platform to quickly make their goods available on their sites. With the integration, WordPress.com Enterprise and VIP users will be able to easily embed items for sale anywhere they wish to, whether that be in posts, separate pages, or even through various sidebars on […]
Daily Theme & Plugin Roundup – 03.28.2013
Happy Thursday everyone! I have a few new plugins to share with you today. Check them out!
Jetpack Announces New 'Dev Mode'
Move over Jetpack lite – the recent update of Jetpack 2.2.1 now has what tons of developers have been asking for: Developer Mode, where you can activate the plugin on a local environment for testing and all that fun stuff. People have been waiting a long time for this and now it’s finally here: Turn on Development Mode right now by adding define( ‘JETPACK_DEV_DEBUG’, true);to your wp-config.php file. A quick note: development mode automatically gets enabled if you don’t have a period in your site’s hostname, i.e. localhost. If you use a different URL, such asmycooltestsite.local or something, it is then that you will need […]
Creating a Drop-down Menu of Sub-pages
One of our responsibilities as developers is not only to make things work, but to make things work well (read: easily) for the end-user. I was recently handed a project where the client had a page that needed to display a drop-down menu of its sub-pages. There were 5+ pages like this. The seemingly easiest thing to do was make a template for each of these “special cases” and register a menu for each one. Making so many one-off page templates feels like a poor development practice. That’s a lot of repeated code. Not only that but any time the […]
Week of Releases: BuddyPress, bbPress, and iOS
Hey, that rhymes! BuddyPress has hit their RC1 Candidate and is going to be incredibly exciting for the thousands upon thousands of users who use BuddyPress for their sites: BuddyPress 1.7 is going to be one of our most exciting releases to date. It comes packaged with the same theme compatibility that was introduced in bbPress 2.0, which means that BuddyPress will now work out-of-the-box with a majority of the WordPress themes available today. This is going to be a really big deal. In terms of bbPress, what I’m excited are the forum migration tools that are being released:
