The most troubling thing about the recent Facebook and OKCupid experiments may not be the experiments themselves. It may be the potential of the controversies surrounding their publication that discourages wider emotional experimentation. Ethical behavior implies acting in a way that cultivates the good life. Content providers and services that honestly seek to pursue this need to do more testing to see not only what sells products or engages users, but what leads toward the greater good. Until now, this kind of research has been impractical, but the rise of tools for automatically assessing emotions — like text analytics tools and […]
WordPress 4.0, “Benny,” is Now Available
WordPress 4.0 has arrived! The release of 4.0 — honorably named “Benny” after jazz and swing musician Benny Goodman — was led by Helen Hou-Sandí, with the help of a whopping 275 contributors, which according to the announcement is a new high. 4.0 brings with it a slew of new features aimed to enhance the overall writing, creating, and publishing experience in WordPress. Here are some of the highlighted features: Managing your media uploads in the library is more seamless than ever — now displaying media in a beautiful, endless grid. Embedding content on WordPress is now an effortless task, and offers an expansive […]
Google Officially Removes Authorship Function
In December 2013, Google restricted Authorship’s reach by cutting back the number of people using it. Then in July, Google reduced Authorship’s impact by removing the author image attached to the snippet. After months of toying with us, and gradually reducing the benefits, Google has finally decided to kill off Authorship. From now on, you’ll no longer see the author of an article appearing in the SERPs, and Google’s algorithm has also stopped tracking the authorship markup. It’s gone, and it isn’t coming back. All the signs pointed to this happening, and yet it still comes as something of a surprise. […]
Introduction to the JSON REST API Part 2
Update: For more information, you can download our free ebook, The Ultimate Guide to the WordPress REST API In last week’s article, I showed just how easy it is to use the new WordPress REST API to get posts from a remote site. In this article we’re going to build on what we learned last week and use the REST API to copy posts from one site to another. First I’ll show you how to create a post in a site with data sourced from a remote site via the REST API. Then I’ll show you how to take a post […]
Avoid Creating Clickbait Headlines; Your Jaw Will Drop from These Incredible Tips
When you’re wandering (sometimes aimlessly, sometimes with a particular mission), around the internet, you will inevitably be bombarded with a slew of headlines and video titles. Some of these headlines are efficient and transparent, quickly telling you what you are about to read once you click through. They take a legitimate and journalistic approach to bringing readers in. There are other headlines, however, which will use manipulation to make readers feel supernaturally compelled to read the full article. This isn’t necessarily a new phenomenon. A tease is a tease. Don’t we all remember watching primetime television (back when people couldn’t […]
How to Set Up a WordPress Blog in 10 Minutes or Less
As a serious user of WordPress, one of the things you will do most often is run through its installation process. Whether it’s on your own site, a local development environment, or the live site of a client, the 5-minute WordPress install will be part of your daily life—like eating and breathing. What to Expect from Your First WordCamp
With fall right around the corner here in North America (I know it feels way too soon), it seems that WordCamp season kicks into high gear. This year is no exception—with over 20 WordCamps currently scheduled to happen between the end of August and the beginning of December. And with all those WordCamps, comes lots of knowledge, confusion, and sometimes frustration for a first time attendee. That alone could cause people to miss out on a great opportunity to learn, network, meet new people, and even build new business relationships. But I am in a unique position to give you a […]
4 Reasons Why You Should Sell WordPress Plugins Independently
To sell independently or to join a plugin marketplace? Ah, but that is the question. It’s a question that’s stumped many talented WordPress developers over the years, and for good reason: there is no right or wrong answer. Some WordPress developers would do well to sell all the premium plugins they code independently; for others, striking out on their own without the aid of a pre-established marketplace can be a career-killing mistake. There are pros and cons to both sides of the issue. In this post, I’d like to take a look at reasons why a WordPress developer should sell […]
Introducing Some Lesser-Known WordPress Clubs
One of the major benefits of WordPress is the ability to use themes and plugins to add design and functionality to our website. This is a benefit which most of us would otherwise be unable to create ourselves. Now, in some cases the free options available work fine – but they can be hit or miss. Going premium is the most reliable way to find themes with the best designs, quality, and functionality. Unfortunately, this can be expensive. One of the most cost-effective ways to get access to premium WordPress themes and plugins is to join what’s known as a WordPress club. By joining a WordPress […]
Introduction to the JSON REST API
Update: For more information, you can download our free ebook, The Ultimate Guide to the WordPress REST API In my article on the future of WordPress, I wrote about how the introduction of a JSON RESTful API to WordPress core will radically expand WordPress’s reach and capabilities. What is so exciting about this new REST API — which is currently available as a plugin, and slated to be included in WordPress 4.1 — is its ability to use it to not only display content from other WordPress sites, or even other applications entirely, but to save content from other sites, whether they are […]
