The Story of BusyBox and The First GPL Lawsuit
I’m near-infinitely curious about open source technology and how that impacts us not at just a microscopic leve but also a macroscopic as well – how it’s changing not just how I see software and product development but how it’s changing the landscape of publishing as a whole. That’s why I spend time looking into and understanding licensing and the licensing issues (especially around the GPL) and find interesting comparisons between WordPress and other CMSs and their challenges (like Joomla’s Civil War). With Joomla’s and WordPress’ issues with licensing it can be hard, at times, to understand what exactly the […]
Dove Calls Out Envato's Photo Tuts (and Others)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m0JF4QxPpvM&feature=youtu.be You’ve probably seen this video being shared a few times already but if you haven’t you’ll notice an Envato property being used as an example of “one” of those Photoshop-centric sites that are helping graphic artists mask “real beauty” with filters and actions. What their campaign is simply about is reminding us that our real beauty doesn’t have to be altered.
The WordPress Weekend Roundup
Yikes. It’s been a busy Saturday and I’m finally getting around to compiling our weekly review of content that we didn’t get to cover explicitly over the last 7 days. In a good way I’m glad as I spent most of my time today with family. Soccer games, a date with one of my daughters, and then the park with my other one has left me spent. I hope your weekend has been as eventful as mine already as well!
Kriesi Sells Over $2MM on ThemeForest
It’s hard to imagine but it’s true – Kriesi, one of the top theme providers at ThemeForest has crossed the $2MM in sales figure to become the first of his kind. He first passed the $1MM mark just a few months more than a year ago – so he’s scaling fast! Unbelievably fast to be sure. He’s moved on from being a one-man show to now building a team: There has been a little more change on the business side of things. My team and I have made some important steps from being a one-man show to growing into a […]
Joomla's Historical Civil War and Why We Should Care
The dust has cleared in more than a few ways since the GPL debate became a big discussion point in the last few months and I believe everyone is breathing a little easier knowing that some of the major issues have been resolved. Or, at the very least, things are moving back to a point of equilibrium among the larger parties involved. The active and passionate discussion will continue to circle over our heads since we’ll never be completely clear of it as long as WordPress continues to be licensed under the GPL. What’s fascinating is to note that these […]
Leafping: Notification System for Envato Authors
Are you an Envato author and would like to know when you make a sale, get a comment, or even a referral so you can engage with your customers better? Then Leafping might be your next purchase – it’s a sweet iOS and Android notification app and plugin that provides not just notifications on your mobile device but also a robust dashboard as well. The cost? It’s a bit like choose-your-own-adventure style where you can pay the Leafping authors anywhere between $5.00 and $20, depending on how useful you feel the service will be for you. It’s a neat model […]
Envato GPL Licensing Survey Results
Envato has announced a subset report of the GPL licensing survey that they created a little while back to help discover whether or not the authors within their marketplace were interested in the licensing structure changes that may be made available to them in light of current events and discussions (see here, here, and here). Last month there was some online discussion around full GPL licensing and the Envato Marketplaces. It started when one of our TF authors was barred from supporting, speaking at and volunteering at WordCamps because he was selling on ThemeForest. While ThemeForest themes sell with a […]
Envato Adds Single Sign On
A lot of people have been asking about this feature to the mega-large network that is Envato and they finally released their single sign on feature this morning. I logged in successfully and was very happy to be able to browse through the many different marketplaces without having to login a bunch of times. For most users this will be fairly seamless after having to login the first time and then they’ll be off to the races. If you see any issues you’re more than welcome to create a support ticket. If you’re not exactly sure what this is all about […]
