You know how you keep dating the same type of jerk and wondering why it never works out? Well, you’re failing to use Pattern Recognition—recognizing patterns or regularities in the data. Pattern recognition can also be used to evaluate startups, and their founders, to determine the potential success (or otherwise) of the venture. From the personality traits of founders, to the objective of the startup, to the importance of solving your own problems, there seem to be some commonalities that you can try to check off if you want to truly make it as a startup. Solve Large & Real […]
5 Lessons from Day 1 of TechCrunch Disrupt NY
TechCrunch Disrupt kicked off yesterday at the Manhattan Center in Midtown New York. The day was packed full of techie goodness. At the risk of revealing my own ignorance, I’m going to share the top 5 things I learned on Day 1. 1) Bitcoin is based on something called a block chain architecture, which allows for trustless transactional activity. Right now you need someone to be the arbiter of identity—either Facebook, Twitter, or Google—somebody who developers can use for login and other information sharing. I think you could do the same thing with a block-chain architecture, where there is no […]

Toys, Books, and Other Copyright Boondoggles
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you probably saw last week’s copyright battle between GoldieBlox—a toy company founded to inspire girls to go into engineering and sciences—and the surviving two members of the Beastie Boys. The trouble began with a GoldieBlox promo video that parodied the 1987 Beastie Boys song “Girls”—which went on to receive over 8 million hits on YouTube. There was a two-and-fro between GoldieBlox and lawyers for the Beastie Boys (who are famous for not allowing use of their work in commercials, especially since deceased band member Adam Yauch forbade it in his will). GoldieBlox decided to take the […]

Automattic Files 2 Lawsuits in the Fight Against Censorship
WordPress.com’s parent company Automattic is putting its money where its mouth is when it comes to democratizing publishing. Filing two lawsuits under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), Automattic claims that the two parties knowingly submitted fraudulent takedown notices. On the WordPress Blog, Paul Sieminski explained: Through these suits, we’d like to remind our users that we’re doing all we can to combat DMCA abuse on WordPress.com…and most importantly, remind copyright abusers to think twice before submitting fraudulent takedown notices. We’ll be watching, and are ready to fight back. The first lawsuit involves Retraction Watch, a website run by science journalists Ivan Oransky and Adam Marcus. […]
Sleek WordPress Concept Redesign by George Kordas
A responsive concept redesign of WordPress admin—featuring the dashboard, media gallery, iconography, widgets, and colors—has been posted by Melbourne-based UI Designer and Frond-End Developer George Kordas. Imran Hunzai of iHunzai.com called it an “inspirational and out of the box design.” He explained: The redesign gives the feeling of the new iOS7 design which is more flat with a glassy look. On Advanced WordPress, a few people questioned the usability of George’s design. One member pointed out that the removal of shadows, bevels, and gradients makes it difficult to discern which parts are clickable, and which aren’t. Overwhelmingly though, people described the design as “beautiful.” This is what George […]

The History of the Democratization of Publishing
We’ve heard it many times before—WordPress is democratizing publishing. But have you ever stopped to think about what that really means? Definition of Democratization Democracy can be defined as: A system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives. To put it more simply, democratic governments answer to their citizens. Through voting, people frame the institutions that govern them. But democracy doesn’t only apply to governments, it can occur in groups or organizations. In this context, democracy means that everyone in the group is treated equally and has equal rights, […]
