Plugins come and go, but some have real lasting power. With the perspective of 2012 behind me, here are a few that made my life much easier. I hope they can help you too. A small note: I like to code most of my front-end effects myself. I don’t usually rely on plugins for galleries, carousels, tabs or the like as I find they usually make a mess of your otherwise perfectly semantic front-end code. Just one man’s opinion. But anyway, you won’t find anything like that on this list. Here’s my favorites of 2012:
Notice: Changing Email Subscription Services
We’ve been using Jetpack’s built-in email delivery system but it’s way to limited and delivers every single blog post in an individual email the moment we hit “Publish.” This has annoyed a few of our readers already and trust me when I say that it annoys me as well. As a result, we’re going to move to Feedburner at least for now because it provides a free daily digest option for our subscribers so you don’t get completely hammered by blog posts throughout the day. So, if you’ve subscribed via our Jetpack system and want a more manageable inbox, feel […]
WooThemes Releases WooCommerce 2.0 Beta 1
WooThemes has announced their release of Beta 1 for WooCommerce, their free plugin that is being widely adopted for many individuals and businesses. We’ve been using it and it does a great job of creating that simple eCommerce experience and checkout – we hope to use it more this coming year, especially with some of the new updates and features they plan on releasing for the next big update. Coen Jacobs, who helps lead that team, shares a few thoughts on some of the new things that customers and bloggers can expect:
10 Lessons I Learned from My First 30 Days of Blogging
30 days ago I had a problem: I have a vast amount of experience in my career field, but I was just another face in the crowd. What could I do to make me and my skills stand out? Build a great resume? Nope. That is outdated and just doesn’t have the oomph that I was looking for. Network like crazy? Nope. While networking is a must do, it is definitely not my strong suite…I am the introvert of all introverts. I would just get lost in the crowd. What can I do to fix this problem? There is this […]
Popularity Makes WordPress a Larger Target for Hacks, Attacks
It’s no question that as a piece of software gains popularity it also gains interest from those who would want to exploit it for their own gain. Most of us know this intimately if we’ve spent any time in the Windows environment as the security industry for malware and attacks on Windows-based PCs is huge! WordPress is only growing, now powering more than 17% of the top 1MM sites in the world – this makes it a prime target for hackers and malicious evildoers. An infographic via Page.ly shows some of this data cleverly:
Poetry: Life in Motion and Code
I just had the pleasure of being interviewed by Code Poet, a free resource for anyone who builds anything with WordPress. It’s an Automattic production so these are trusted resources coming right from the staff themselves – seriously worth a subscribe (and telling others about it). I share some thoughts about how I got started with WordPress and where it’s taken me. It’s honestly hard to imagine the impact that one piece of software could have on my short life so far – I felt like I could write a book on it so far and there’s still so much […]
Max Foundry Brings Shopp Integration to MaxButtons Pro
Max Foundry – the company behinds products such as MaxGalleria and MaxInbound – recently released a major update to their MaxButtons Pro product. Specifically, MaxButtons Pro now features Shopp integration. Neat, right?
Code Poetry
WordPress has been using “Code is Poetry” as their tagline since as long as I can remember using it (if anyone knows where it came from, I’d love to know). The slogan has always been very effective at communicating the approach that WordPress takes, a blend of elegant simplicity and infinite expansion. All that lies behind your WordPress install is bits of code strung togehter like a symphony. Still, the phrase prompts a deeper look. I am still no expert, but I have learned the basic principles of code and the process has really opened up for me. I have […]
Finding Balance Through Work, Life, and My Blog
Before I began blogging myself, I was always a huge fan of it. There is something awesome about hearing what others have to say about their own personal experience with certain situations. Whether it was about their line of work, something drastic in their life, or finding helping others find solutions to issues they had once had. The fact that someone is willing to share valuable information with someone they don’t even know, the whole world for that matter, is astounding. That takes a lot of guts.
Your Primer to Accessibility (Not Just for WordPress)
I love all of the resources that are readily available to us via the WordPress community and core team – in fact, if you just dig a little you’ll encounter a host of knowledge that you may not have been aware of that has already been created. For example, accessibility is a huge focus for WordPress as the goal is to enable and support as many people as possible, even those with disabilities or handicaps. Accessibility is more than just design – it’s a way of thinking and building applications and crafting an experience that makes sense: Accessibility in web […]
