Just kidding…! …? Apparently a few of the Automatticians challenged each other to “knuckle pushups” – perhaps they were fighting over who would pay the tab that night. But it is a Theme Team tradition – ouch.
Is Automattic Worth More Than Tumblr?
With the recent news of Tumblr being purchased by Yahoo! for $1.1 billion dollars there have been a ton of comparisons between that purchase and many other blogging services. Naturally, WordPress has been among those comparisons. But WordPress, as a software, is not like Tumblr because it’s open source software whereas Tumblr is not, so the closer comparison is really between Automattic, the largest commercial company and Tumblr as a company. Is Automattic’s valuation even close to Tumblr’s $1.1billion? Well, it might be worth more as the recent liquidity / investment event with Tiger Global. As Fortune shares, “a source familiar […]
Daniel Bachhuber Gets Engaged
Great timing too as it’s going to be difficult to forget when the proposal was officially as it’s so close to WordPress’ own birthday. If you’re a guy then you know this as it can be incredibly tough to remember particular and important dates! Congrats to Daniel Bachhuber who proposed at a Rodeo this past Sunday! He shares more of his story (and asking for Leah’s hand in marriage via his future father-in-law) on his own blog.
Mike Little To Be Honored at SAScon 2013
Matt Mullenweg is everywhere as he’s not only one of the founders of WordPress but also the leader of the largest WordPress commercial business, Automattic. But he was just one of the founders of WordPress, the other being Mike Little, who doesn’t get as much press time as he deserves. A lot of this is by choice and so there aren’t any hard feelings about it. Every once in a while Mike does an interview and such and he surfaces. But in the upcoming SAScon 2013 event he’s going to be honored publicly as an “unsung internet visionary” and the title is pretty […]
Matt Updates Blog Design, Raises $50M Too
In a blog post this morning Matt Mullenweg, one of the founders of WordPress, shares that Tiger Global has invested over $50M in his company, Automattic. This isn’t a new capital round or series round – rather, it’s based on secondary stock purchases so that earlier investors can “lock in some returns” which releases pressure for a much larger liquidity event. Tiger Global joins the likes of Polaris Partners, True Ventures, Radar Partners, and the New York Times Company all who have stake in the growing company. As Toni Schneider shares in his blog post, Tiger isn’t a small player (although a more “behind the scenes” […]
A Sweet Look at Automattic's San Fran Office
Although Automattic is very much a distributed and virtual team they do have physical locations and offices for their employees to meetup and do their work, something that some news organizations seem to overlook. In a recent visit to their San Francisco offices, Peter Slutsky captured a few neat shots as he walked through the environment – check out those digs!
Code Garage Closes, Moves Fully to VaultPress
As many people had thought and as Code Garage has shared previously, all customers are being asked to migrate to VaultPress through their automated system in the next few months. This will essentially complete the acquisition that Automattic made back in December of last year. As of right now, no new signups are being offered by Code Garage and instead you’ll be signing up with VaultPress directly. For a time I thought that maybe both would co-exists, sharing technology best practices under two different brands and identities but it would see that folding Code Garage completely under VaultPress was going to […]
VaultPress: New 'Lite' Plan @ $5 per Month
This has been a long time coming! When VaultPress first arrived on the scenes one of most common reactions from bloggers (of all sizes) was: Ugh, $15 per month? I can’t do that! Well they just made their incredible service much more in reach of the average blogger and consumer by dropping into a $5.00 per month plan that they are calling ‘Lite’. I think this makes complete sense and I believe that scaling in this way will see an incredible increase of subscriptions and users.
