Greeting, WordPressers. I’m Grant Palin, a resident in Victoria, British Columbia, about to be attending one of my favourite yearly events in my hometown: WordCamp Victoria! I’ve been offered the opportunity to live-blog this event, so I am preparing a trio of posts; the first is this one, to introduce myself and layout the day, the second will be a live blog, and the third will be a wrap-up. Victoria has hosted a WordCamp for several years, and I’ve attended most of those. This year’s event is Saturday, January 12, 8:30 to 5:30, and is hosted at the University of […]

Gather App: A Must-Have for WordCamp Organizers
It’s always difficult to write a blog title and use the word “must have” since many people consider that link-bait (the tactic of creating a crazy-stupid title for the purpose of click-throughs) but after reviewing this app I am finding it hard to justify not using it for any WordCamp, especially if you’re an organizer. What is Gather App? Quite simple: It’s a text-based alert system for your WordCamp conference (or any conference / gathering for that matter) that’s simple, intuitive, and cost-effective. And Gather lets you do all of this by letting you text your guests as a group (or […]
WordCamp Atlanta, March 15-16, 2013
I couldn’t be more stoked to share with you guys WordCamp Atlanta 2013, which is happening on March 15-16 in the Loudermilk Center. The reason I’m calling attention to this is probably obvious – WordCamp Atlanta is our hometown WordCamp and not only am I part of the leadership committee this year representing 8BIT and WP Daily, we’re having the After Party for speakers, sponsors, and VIP at the WP Daily offices, just half a mile away (Map Here)! It’s going to be amazing and I hope you can attend!
Interested in Starting a WordCamp? Get Mentored!
Or, at least that’s the proposal. You see, the number of WordCamps are growing every single year and we’re very excited about that but the truth is that starting, launching, and executing a successful WordCamp can be a very daunting task, especially for first-time event planners. I know this for a fact since my wife has planned a number of events (that is a stressful period and time when she’s “right” in the middle of it) and I’m also helping to plan the WordCamp here in Atlanta, GA (and it’s a challenge!). But wouldn’t it be neat if there was […]
How I Got More Involved in the Community in 2012
In addition to my WordPress development goals in 2012, another one I had was to get more involved in the WordPress community—whatever that looked like for me. This ‘community’ is constantly trumpeted as the backbone of the project itself, but I felt overwhelmed figuring out how to take the first step. To be honest, I was also afraid I’d make quite a fool of myself. I’m not a world class developer (yet, hopefully), I’d only given one public tech talk, I had no idea how Trac worked, and I’d never submitted a theme or plugin to the repository. From the […]
WordCamp Toronto: Choosing a Premium WordPress Theme
Sean Nilsson shares in a recent talk at WordCamp Toronto how to go about choosing the right premium theme to use. It’s practical for those that are first wandering into the realms of themes that you actually pay dollars for. His official description of the talk and deck after the jump:
January WordCamps Showcase International Presence
January is just around the corner and there are six (count ’em), six WordCamps that are happening in six different countries and only one in the US of A. I think this clearly shows the universal play that WordPress has around the globe and I’m so stoked that the first month of 2013 is so international. Here they are: WordCamp Victoria, January 12 in Victoria, British Columbia WordCamp Phoenix, January 18-20 in Phoenix, Arizona WordCamp Paris, January 18-19 in Paris, France WordCamp Mexico, January 18-19 in Ciudad de Mexico, Distrito Federal, México WordCamp Baroda, January 26-27 in Baroda, India WordCamp Norway, January 26-27 in Oslo, Norway Pretty neat, […]
WordCamp Toronto Session Notes and Slides
There are so many great WordCamps going on that it’s hard to keep track of them all! But we’re committed to helping cover them as they come and go and provide you resources that are publicly shared via each one! WordCamp Toronto finished early last month and the slides and decks are finally being uploaded and shared – there are some incredible presentations that were given that you may want to give a few seconds. Like many WordCamps, they broke it out into Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced tracks to help conference goers spend their time wisely. Here’s a master list […]
Primer: Your First Contribution to Core WordPress Development
Some of the best ways that software development-minded individuals help the WordPress community is by contributing to “core” – or the foundational codebase that powers the millions of blogs around the world. But even if you don’t have a background in software development let that not scare you from making an attempt! And, it’s not that hard, as Dave Martin shares at a recent WordCamp Raleigh event. Just imagine the impact that you would have and the millions of people who would be eternally grateful for your service and work? If that gets you cooking then you should definitely consider […]
